How it works

## You bring the paperwork. _Worthbase does the rest._

AI is great at reading messy statements, but it can slip when it adds up hundreds of rows or converts currencies from memory. So your assistant does the reading, and Worthbase does everything after that: checking, exact maths, daily prices, history, goals and your weekly email.

### Connect once

Add Worthbase as a connector in Claude or ChatGPT, or any MCP client, with the address `worthbase.app/mcp`. Sign in, approve, done. It takes about two minutes.

### Drop in your statements

Broker CSVs, pension and retirement statements, property valuations, loan balances, even a screenshot. Your AI maps them. Worthbase validates every row and shows you a preview before anything is saved.

### Ask anything

“What's our net worth?” “What if I sold half my Apple shares?” “How are we tracking against our goal?” Every figure in the answer is calculated by Worthbase, and your AI quotes it.

### It keeps working

Every day Worthbase prices your holdings, checks the books still balance and saves your history. Each week you get what moved and how your goals are tracking, with no app to open.

Why trust it

## Built like a ledger, _not a chatbot._

A balance sheet is only useful if you can believe it. Worthbase has the guarantees you'd expect from accounting software, while you do everything in plain conversation.

- **Exact to the cent**

Money is stored in whole cents and calculated with exact decimals. Rounding follows written rules, and cost bases always add up to the statement.

- **Preview before every write**

Your AI can't quietly change your numbers. Every import is shown to you first, including duplicates, conflicts and statement mismatches.

- **Audited and undoable**

Every number traces back to its source file and row. Undo replays the whole ledger and refuses if it would leave your history inconsistent.

- **No bank passwords, ever**

Worthbase never connects to your bank or broker. You decide exactly what goes in, and you can export all of it whenever you like.

What it covers

## Everything you own and owe, _in one place._

Built for how families actually hold wealth: joint names, trusts, companies, offset accounts, several currencies, and a spreadsheet you've been meaning to update since 2021.

### Households & entities

Split anything between people, trusts, companies and self-managed funds by exact percentages. See net worth for the family or for each person.

### Daily prices & history

Shares and ETFs on major exchanges (ASX, US, London and more), crypto and precious metals are priced daily, in any currency, with history back to your first trade.

### Cost bases and gains, done properly

Exact cost bases and the gain or loss on every holding and every sale, fees included, in any currency. Worthbase keeps the numbers; your accountant handles the tax.

### Property & debt

Link mortgages to properties and offset accounts to loans. Equity, loan-to-value and your effective balance are worked out for you.

### What-if, safely

Simulate a sale before you make it: proceeds, the lots used, and the gain or loss for each owner. Nothing is written.

### Real performance

Total return including income and fees, and an annualised rate of return (XIRR) based on when your money actually went in and out.

Every week

## Your week in one email. _Your goals in view._

No app to check. Once a week, on the day you choose, Worthbase emails you what your net worth did, what moved it, and how close you are to the goals you've set.

- **What moved, and why**

Market moves are kept apart from values you updated, so a new property estimate never looks like a good week on the market.

- **Goals that track themselves**

Set a target, like $2M by 2030 or the home loan paid off, and see how far along you are and whether you're on pace.

- **Nudges, not noise**

A value that's gone stale or a statement that doesn't match shows up once, with the sentence to ask your AI. Hide dollar amounts or switch it off anytime.

## Questions you can finally _answer in seconds._

What's our net worth, and how much of it is actually investable? If I sold 200 Apple shares today, how much would the gain be for me and for my partner? How has the family trust's portfolio really performed since 2022? What's the loan-to-value on the rental property after the offset? Which of my holdings haven't been updated in over a month? Here's my pension statement. Does it match what you have? Show me our net worth by month for the last three years.

Questions

## Good questions to ask _before you trust us._

Do I need a paid Claude or ChatGPT plan?

You need an AI app that supports custom connectors (MCP). Claude supports them, ChatGPT supports them in developer mode on paid plans, and so do tools like Cursor and Claude Code. The [setup guide](/setup/) walks through each one.

Can the AI make mistakes with my numbers?

It can misread a document, which is why nothing is saved without a preview you approve, and why you can reconcile against your statements. The figures themselves come from Worthbase: every total, gain and conversion is calculated on the server with exact decimals, and your AI is instructed to quote those figures rather than work them out. Your dashboard at worthbase.app/manage shows the same figures straight from the ledger, so you can always check an answer.

Does Worthbase connect to my bank or broker?

No. There are no bank logins and no screen-scraping. You bring the statements, and your AI turns them into entries you approve. It takes less effort than you'd think, and nobody holds your banking credentials.

Does it work in my country?

Yes. Worthbase works worldwide. Holdings, cost bases, gains, net worth, prices and history work in any currency and any country. Set your home currency once, and holdings in other currencies are converted with historical exchange rates.

Is this financial or tax advice?

No. Worthbase is a record-keeping and information tool. It shows what you own and owe, and the gains and losses on your holdings, but it doesn't calculate tax or tell you what to buy or sell. Check tax questions with your accountant.

Who can see my data?

Only the people you invite to a workspace, with the role you give them. Each workspace is stored in its own isolated database. Read more on the [security page](/security/).

Monthly or lifetime?

Both include everything: every kind of asset and loan, people, trusts and companies as owners, and as many workspaces as you need. Monthly starts with 7 days free and you can cancel any time. Lifetime is one payment at our launch price, with no subscription. Already on monthly? You can switch to lifetime from your account.

How does the trial work?

Start monthly with a card. You get full access for 7 days. Cancel any time before then and you won't be charged. After that, it renews monthly until you cancel. Lifetime has no trial: it's a one-off payment and isn't refundable.

What if I cancel?

On monthly, you keep access until the end of the month you've paid for. After that, your AI can't read or change your workspace until you subscribe again, but you can always sign in and export everything as a file.

About

# About Worthbase: a balance sheet _you can trust._

Worthbase is a household net worth and portfolio tracker that runs inside your AI assistant. It exists because AI is very good at reading financial statements and unreliable at adding up hundreds of rows, and a family's balance sheet needs both.

![Sanjay Bhagia, founder of Worthbase](/founder.webp)

From the founder

> I kept our family's finances in a spreadsheet for years. It worked until life got more complicated: a few brokers, retirement savings, the house and the mortgage, a bit of crypto here and some gold there, then a business and a family trust. **Sanjay Bhagia**Founder of Worthbase · [@bhagiasanjay](https://x.com/bhagiasanjay)

[Why it exists](#why) [Principles](#principles) [What it isn't](#not) [Who makes it](#who) [Contact](#contact)

## Why does Worthbase exist?

Most households that care about their net worth end up with a spreadsheet. It starts well, then falls behind: a broker changes its export format, a currency needs converting, a sale needs a cost base nobody wrote down, and the file stops being something you believe.

Bank-sync apps solve the updating by asking for your bank and broker passwords, and still struggle with property, retirement accounts, trusts and holdings in several currencies. General-purpose AI assistants can read any statement you give them, but they forget everything between conversations and can get the sums wrong.

Worthbase splits the work. Your AI does what it's good at: reading PDFs, CSVs and screenshots and turning them into structured rows. Worthbase does what a ledger has to do: validate every row, show you a preview, store it permanently, calculate with exact decimals, price holdings daily, and keep a history you can audit. You get a household balance sheet you can trust, without handing anyone your banking credentials.

## What principles is it built on?

- **Exact numbers.** Money is stored in whole minor units and calculated with exact decimals, never floating point. Rounding follows written rules. Your AI quotes Worthbase's figures instead of working them out.
- **Preview before writing.** Every write is previewed first, including duplicates, conflicts and statement mismatches, and saved only when you confirm.
- **Audit and undo.** Every row records which file and row it came from, who added it, through which app and when. Any batch can be undone; undo replays the ledger and refuses if the result would be inconsistent. Nothing is hard-deleted.
- **Your data is yours.** You can export everything at any time, even after you cancel. There are no bank or broker logins, and Worthbase never moves money or places trades.
- **Not advice.** Worthbase is a record-keeping and information tool. It shows your figures, including gains, losses and simulated sales, but it doesn't tell you what to buy, sell or hold, and it doesn't calculate tax.

How these are enforced is on the [security page](/security/).

## What isn't Worthbase?

It isn't a budgeting app: it doesn't sync bank feeds or categorise spending. It isn't tax software, a broker, a bank or an adviser. It isn't a chatbot that stores your finances in a conversation: the ledger lives in Worthbase, and any AI app you connect reads the same workspace.

## Who makes Worthbase?

Worthbase is built in Australia by Sanjay Bhagia, for households anywhere and in any currency. It's operated by Arigato Consulting Pty Ltd (ACN 657 703 065), a company registered in New South Wales, Australia. The [terms](/terms/) and [privacy policy](/privacy/) set out how the service and your data are handled.

Worthbase for ChatGPT

# A net worth and portfolio tracker _inside ChatGPT._

Worthbase turns ChatGPT into a portfolio tracker and net worth app for your household. Connect it once, then hand ChatGPT a broker export or a pension statement, or just ask what you're worth. ChatGPT does the reading and the conversation; Worthbase keeps the ledger, does every calculation exactly and asks for your approval before anything is saved.

[Connect ChatGPT](/setup/#chatgpt) [See pricing](/pricing/)

## What does Worthbase add _to ChatGPT?_

ChatGPT is good at reading a messy CSV or a PDF statement. On its own, it has no memory of your finances between chats and it can slip on arithmetic. Worthbase is the ChatGPT finance app that fixes both: a permanent, exact record ChatGPT reads from and writes to through a connector.

- **A ledger that persists**

Holdings, trades, valuations, loans and owners are stored in your Worthbase workspace, not in the chat. Start a new conversation tomorrow and it's all there.

- **Server-side arithmetic**

Totals, currency conversion, cost bases, gains and returns are calculated by Worthbase with exact decimals. ChatGPT quotes the figures; it doesn't compute them.

- **It keeps working after the chat**

Daily prices for shares, ETFs, crypto, gold and silver, a net worth history, goals, and a weekly email.

Requirements

## What do you need to use it _in ChatGPT?_

Two things: a ChatGPT plan that can add custom connectors, and a Worthbase trial or subscription. Today ChatGPT supports custom connectors through developer mode on paid plans. OpenAI changes these menus from time to time, so check the [setup guide](/setup/#chatgpt) for the current steps.

### 1 · Turn on developer mode

In ChatGPT's settings, under apps and connectors, switch on developer mode.

### 2 · Add the connector

Create a connector named Worthbase with the address `https://worthbase.app/mcp` and OAuth sign-in. There's no key to paste.

### 3 · Sign in and chat

Sign in to Worthbase, approve access, and pick Worthbase in a new chat. Start by asking it to set up your household.

Example prompts

## Things to ask ChatGPT _once it's connected._

Set up Worthbase for me and my partner, then show the overview. Here's my Schwab export. Import it and show me the preview first. What's our net worth, in euros, and what changed this month? What gains have I realised since January, and on which holdings? What if I sold all my Tesla shares? Our house was valued at £640,000 today. Record it. Undo the last import.

Safety

## Is it safe to let ChatGPT _edit my finances?_

ChatGPT can't quietly change your numbers. Every import is a preview first, showing new holdings, duplicates, conflicts and the net worth change, and it's saved only when you say yes. Every change is audited back to its source file and row, and any import can be undone; undo replays your whole history and refuses if the result would be inconsistent. Nothing is ever hard-deleted. Worthbase never connects to your bank or broker, never moves money and never places trades. Text inside your documents is treated as data, never as instructions. More on the [security page](/security/).

Questions

## Worthbase in ChatGPT _questions._

Does it work on the free ChatGPT plan?

Custom connectors currently need developer mode, which OpenAI offers on paid plans. The [setup guide](/setup/#chatgpt) lists the plans and current steps.

Can I use Claude as well as ChatGPT?

Yes. Your data lives in Worthbase, not in either app, so you can connect [Claude](/claude/), ChatGPT, Cursor or Claude Code to the same workspace and switch between them.

Does OpenAI see my financial data?

When you ask ChatGPT a question, Worthbase sends it the answer, which OpenAI then handles under its privacy terms and your account settings. Worthbase only sends what the tool you called returns, and only to apps you've connected.

Will ChatGPT give me investment advice through Worthbase?

Worthbase tells connected apps it doesn't give financial advice. ChatGPT can show your figures, performance and a simulated sale, but Worthbase won't recommend what to buy or sell.

# A net worth and portfolio tracker _inside Claude._

Worthbase is a Claude connector for personal finance: add it once and Claude becomes a portfolio tracker and household balance sheet you run by conversation. Claude reads your statements and answers your questions; Worthbase, an MCP server, keeps the ledger, does the arithmetic exactly and previews every change for your approval.

[Connect Claude](/setup/#claude) [See pricing](/pricing/)

## What does Worthbase add _to Claude?_

Claude can read a broker CSV, a pension PDF or a screenshot of a loan balance in seconds. What it doesn't have on its own is a permanent, exact record of your finances. Worthbase is that record, reached through the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

- **Web, desktop and mobile**

Add the connector once on claude.ai and it's available in the Claude web app, the desktop app and the mobile apps.

- **Exact figures, quoted**

Net worth, cost bases, capital gains, XIRR and loan-to-value come from Worthbase's ledger with exact decimals. Claude quotes them; it doesn't compute them.

- **Tool approvals you choose**

Claude asks before it uses a tool. You can set read-only tools, like net worth and reports, to always allow and keep writes on needs approval.

- **Also in Claude Code**

Developers can add the same server to Claude Code with one command. See the [setup guide](/setup/#claude-code) or the [developer page](/developers/).

## How do you add Worthbase _as a Claude connector?_

You need a Claude account that can add custom connectors and a Worthbase trial or subscription. Anthropic moves these settings from time to time, so check the [setup guide](/setup/#claude) for the current steps.

### 1 · Add a custom connector

In Claude's settings, open Connectors and add a custom connector named Worthbase with the address `https://worthbase.app/mcp`.

### 2 · Connect and sign in

Click Connect, sign in to Worthbase with your subscription email and approve access. No client ID or secret is needed.

### 3 · Switch it on in a chat

Make sure Worthbase is on in the chat's connectors menu, then ask Claude to set up your household.

Example prompts

## Things to ask Claude _once it's connected._

Set up Worthbase for our family: me, my partner and our joint accounts. Here's my Hargreaves Lansdown export. Import it and show the preview. Here's my 401(k) statement. Update the balance. Show our net worth at each quarter end for the last two years. How has my portfolio done since 2023, as an annualised return? What's stale? Walk me through updating it. Set a goal of $1.5M net worth by 2030.

Safety

## Can Claude change my numbers _without asking?_

No. Imports are previewed first and saved only after you confirm. Every change is audited to its source, anything can be undone, and nothing is ever hard-deleted; undo replays the ledger and refuses if it would leave your history inconsistent. The connector uses OAuth, so Claude never sees your Worthbase password, and Worthbase never asks for bank or broker logins. It never moves money, places trades or gives financial advice. Read more on the [security page](/security/).

Questions

## Worthbase in Claude _questions._

Does the Claude connector work on mobile?

Yes. Once you've added the connector on claude.ai it's available in the Claude mobile apps and the desktop app too, so you can ask about your net worth or photograph a statement on your phone.

Is Worthbase an MCP server?

Yes. It's a remote MCP server at `https://worthbase.app/mcp`, using Streamable HTTP and OAuth. The [developer page](/developers/) lists every tool.

Can I use ChatGPT with the same data?

Yes. Your workspace lives in Worthbase, so [ChatGPT](/chatgpt/), Claude and other MCP apps all see the same balance sheet.

Does Anthropic see my financial data?

When you ask Claude a question, Worthbase returns the answer to Claude, which Anthropic handles under its privacy terms and your account settings. Worthbase only sends what the tool you called returns.

# How Worthbase compares with _the alternatives._

Worthbase is a household net worth and portfolio tracker that runs inside your AI assistant. These pages compare it fairly with the tools people usually use instead, including where the other tool is the better choice.

Compared on 30 September 2026. Other products change often; check their own sites for current features and prices.

## Which comparison are you looking for?

[**Worthbase vs Sharesight**

A dedicated share portfolio tracker with broker integrations, compared with a whole-household ledger in your AI.

](/compare/sharesight/)[**Worthbase vs Kubera**

Two ways to see everything you own: automatic account aggregation, or statements your AI reads into an exact ledger.

](/compare/empower/)[**Worthbase vs a spreadsheet**

Excel and Google Sheets are flexible and free. Where they start to strain: prices, lots, currencies and history.

](/compare/spreadsheet/)

## What makes Worthbase different?

- **It runs inside your AI.** There's no app to learn and no data entry forms. You hand Claude, ChatGPT or another MCP client a statement, a broker CSV or a screenshot, and ask questions in plain language.
- **No bank or broker logins.** Worthbase never connects to your accounts. You decide what goes in.
- **An exact ledger.** Every write is previewed before it's saved, every row traces back to its source file, and undo replays the ledger and refuses if history would break. The arithmetic is done by the server with exact decimals, and the AI quotes the results.
- **The whole household balance sheet.** Shares, ETFs, crypto, gold, property, retirement accounts, cash, loans and mortgages, split by exact percentages between people, trusts, companies, SMSFs and partnerships.
- **A weekly email.** Each week you get what your net worth did and what moved it, with market moves kept apart from manual updates.

## What doesn't Worthbase do?

It's worth knowing before you compare:

- No automatic bank or broker sync. You bring statements and exports, and your AI reads them.
- You need an AI app that supports MCP connectors, such as Claude, ChatGPT (developer mode on paid plans), Cursor or Claude Code. See [setup](/setup/).
- No tax. It reports cost bases and gains and losses, not tax owed; your accountant handles tax.
- The web dashboard is read-only. Changes happen through your AI.
- No budgeting or spending categories.
- It's a young product.

## Questions

Are these comparisons written by Worthbase?

Yes. We've tried to be fair: each page is dated, links to the sources we used and says when the other product is the better fit. If something is out of date or wrong, email [support@worthbase.app](mailto:support@worthbase.app) and we'll fix it.

Can I move my data from another tracker into Worthbase?

Usually, yes. Export your transactions or holdings as a CSV or spreadsheet and give the file to your AI. It maps the columns and Worthbase shows a preview before anything is saved. The [import guides](/import/) cover specific brokers.

Can I use Worthbase alongside another tool?

Yes. Some people keep a broker-connected tool for one portfolio and use Worthbase for the household picture, including property, loans and retirement accounts.

# Worthbase vs Empower Personal Dashboard _(formerly Personal Capital)._

Empower Personal Dashboard is a free US money dashboard that links your accounts and adds budgeting and retirement planning. Worthbase is a paid, global alternative to Empower and Personal Capital that runs inside your AI, keeps an exact ledger and never links your accounts.

Compared on 30 September 2026, using Empower's website and support pages. Check [Empower's site](https://www.empower.com/tools) for current features.

## What's the main difference between Worthbase and Empower?

Personal Capital was renamed Empower in 2023, and its free app is now the Empower Personal Dashboard. It links your bank, credit card, investment, retirement and loan accounts and gives you net worth, cash flow and budgeting, a retirement planner and portfolio analysis, at no cost.

Worthbase doesn't link accounts, doesn't do budgeting and isn't free. It's a household balance sheet you run from Claude, ChatGPT or another AI app: your AI reads statements, and Worthbase keeps an exact ledger of what you own and owe, in any currency, with cost bases, realised gains, loan-to-value and goals.

## Worthbase and Empower side by side

Worthbase

Empower Personal Dashboard

Inside your AI app. A read-only web dashboard.

Web and mobile app.

Your AI reads statements, CSVs and screenshots. No logins.

Link accounts: banks, credit cards, 401(k)s, IRAs, investment accounts, mortgages and loans. Manual accounts too.

Any country and currency, with a base currency per workspace and historical exchange rates.

Account linking supports US-based institutions in US dollars; others can be added as manual accounts.

Budgeting and spending

Not offered.

Cash flow, budgeting and automatic spending categories.

Retirement planning

Retirement accounts tracked by balance; goals with progress and pace.

Retirement planner with scenarios, savings planner, fee and allocation analysis.

Capital gains

Exact lots, cost bases, and realised and unrealised gains and losses; no tax reports.

Holdings and performance from linked accounts.

Ownership and entities

Exact splits between people, trusts, companies, SMSFs and partnerships.

One household view of linked and manual accounts.

Changes

Every write previewed, audited, undoable.

Balances update from linked accounts.

## Why pay when Empower is free?

For many US households, you shouldn't: Empower's free dashboard does a lot, especially if you want budgeting and retirement projections. Empower funds it as part of a larger financial services business that includes paid advisory services.

Worthbase is paid by subscription and has one job: keeping your household balance sheet exact. It doesn't sell advice, products or your data, and it never moves money or places trades. Whether that's worth US$3.99 a month, or US$49 once, depends on whether the differences below matter to you.

## What if you live outside the US?

This is often the deciding factor. According to Empower's support pages, account linking works with US-based institutions in US dollars, and anything else becomes a manual account. If your accounts are in Australia, the UK, Canada or Europe, or you hold assets in several currencies, Empower may not fit well.

Worthbase is built for that. Shares and ETFs are priced daily on major exchanges including the US, London and the ASX, crypto and gold too, and each row stores the exchange rate for its date. A UK SIPP, an Australian super fund, a Canadian RRSP and a US 401(k) can sit in the same balance sheet, converted to your base currency.

## Cost bases and capital gains

Worthbase records the individual buys and sells, so it knows each lot: when you bought it, what you paid and the fees. It calculates realised and unrealised gains and losses exactly (FIFO or lots you choose), and before you sell, it can simulate the sale: proceeds, lots used and the gain or loss for each owner. It reports gains and losses, not tax, so check tax with your accountant.

## Which should you choose?

### Choose Empower Personal Dashboard if…

- You're in the US and your accounts are with US institutions.
- You want automatic account linking and a free tool.
- Budgeting, spending categories and retirement projections matter to you.

### Choose Worthbase if…

- You live outside the US, or hold assets in more than one country or currency.
- You don't want to link accounts, and you want to approve every change.
- You need exact cost bases and gains, or ownership split between people and entities.
- You already use Claude or ChatGPT and want to ask your balance sheet questions directly.

## Questions

Is Empower the same as Personal Capital?

Yes. Personal Capital was renamed Empower in 2023, and its free app is now called Empower Personal Dashboard.

Is Worthbase a Personal Capital alternative outside the US?

Yes, that's one of the main reasons people look at it. Worthbase works in any country and currency, because your AI reads your statements instead of relying on US account connections.

Does Worthbase do budgeting?

No. Worthbase tracks what you own and owe, not day-to-day spending. If you want budgeting, use a budgeting app alongside it.

Can I import my Empower data into Worthbase?

You can give your AI any export or screenshot of your holdings and balances to record as opening balances. For cost bases, import your broker's transaction exports; see the [import guides](/import/).

Empower, Empower Personal Dashboard and Personal Capital are trademarks of their owner. Worthbase isn't affiliated with Empower.

# Worthbase vs Kubera: _two ways to see everything._

Kubera is a net worth tracker that pulls balances automatically from banks, brokerages and crypto wallets, with a spreadsheet-style app and AI connectors. Worthbase is a Kubera alternative that keeps an exact transaction ledger, is run from your AI assistant, and never connects to your accounts.

[The short answer](#short) [Side by side](#table) [Sync or statements](#sync) [Both work with AI](#ai) [Values or a ledger](#ledger) [Which to choose](#choose) [Questions](#faq)

Compared on 30 September 2026, using Kubera's website and help centre. Check [Kubera's site](https://www.kubera.com/) for current features and prices.

## What's the main difference between Worthbase and Kubera?

Both track a whole balance sheet: investments, crypto, property, private assets and debts, in many currencies. Kubera's centre is aggregation: it connects to thousands of institutions and keeps values up to date, and you view and edit it in its app. Worthbase's centre is the ledger: your AI reads statements and exports into buys, sells, income and valuations, and Worthbase works out holdings, cost bases, realised gains and history from those rows exactly.

Put simply: Kubera is strongest when you want balances to update themselves. Worthbase is strongest when you want every number to trace back to a document, with no account connections.

## Automatic sync or your own statements?

Kubera's aggregation is its headline feature, and for many people it's the reason to choose it: accounts update without effort, and it can read institutions that don't offer a direct connection.

Worthbase takes the other route on purpose. It never asks for bank, broker or retirement account logins, so there are no connections to break or re-authorise and no third party holding access. The cost is effort: you download a statement or export and hand it to your AI every so often. Worthbase then flags items whose values are getting stale, so you know what to update.

## Don't both work with Claude and ChatGPT?

Yes. Kubera offers an MCP connector for Claude, ChatGPT and other assistants, and it can create and update entries as well as read them. The difference is in what sits behind the connector. Kubera's AI access is an addition to a full app. Worthbase is designed so the AI is the interface: every write goes through a preview that shows new items, duplicates, conflicts and statement mismatches before anything is saved, the server does all the arithmetic, and undo checks the whole ledger before it runs.

## Values or a transaction ledger?

If you mainly want to know what everything is worth today and how that's changed, values are enough. If you sell shares or crypto and need cost bases, lots and realised gains for each sale, you need the transactions. Worthbase keeps them, with fees included in cost bases and deducted from proceeds, and it can simulate a sale before you make it: proceeds, lots used and the gain or loss for each owner. It reports gains and losses, not tax; your accountant handles tax.

## Which should you choose?

### Choose Kubera if…

- You want balances to update automatically from your banks, brokers and wallets.
- You track DeFi positions, NFTs or many wallets and exchanges.
- You want a full app to edit in, on the web and your phone.
- A legacy feature like the Dead Man's Switch matters to you.

### Choose Worthbase if…

- You don't want to give any service access to your accounts.
- You want exact cost bases and realised gains and losses from the actual trades.
- You want your AI to be the way you add and ask, with a preview before every change.
- You want household ownership split between people and entities at a lower price.

## Questions

Is Worthbase a good Kubera alternative?

If you're happy to bring statements instead of syncing accounts, and you care about transactions, lots and capital gains, yes. If automatic aggregation is what you value most, Kubera is built around it and Worthbase isn't.

Can I move from Kubera to Worthbase?

Yes. Export your data from Kubera as a spreadsheet and give it to your AI to record as opening balances and valuations, then add broker exports if you want full trade history and cost bases. You'll see a preview before anything is saved.

Does Worthbase track DeFi and NFTs?

Worthbase prices common cryptocurrencies daily from CoinGecko. Other holdings, such as NFTs or DeFi positions, can be recorded as manual assets with valuations, but they aren't tracked on-chain.

Can I share Worthbase with my family or adviser?

Yes. Invite people as viewer, editor or admin; invited members join free. You can keep separate workspaces for entities and share each with different people.

Kubera is a trademark of its owner. Worthbase isn't affiliated with Kubera.

# Worthbase vs Sharesight: _which one fits?_

Sharesight is a dedicated share portfolio tracker with automatic trade imports from hundreds of brokers and detailed tax reports. Worthbase is a Sharesight alternative for people who want the whole household balance sheet, run from their AI assistant, without connecting any broker.

[The short answer](#short) [Side by side](#table) [Getting data in](#data) [What it covers](#coverage) [Gains and tax reports](#tax) [Which to choose](#choose) [Questions](#faq)

Compared on 30 September 2026, using Sharesight's own website and help centre. Features and prices change; check [Sharesight's pricing page](https://www.sharesight.com/pricing/) for current details.

## What's the main difference between Worthbase and Sharesight?

Sharesight is built around investment portfolios: it imports trades automatically from supported brokers, applies dividends and corporate actions for you, and produces performance and tax reports. Worthbase is built around the household balance sheet: shares and crypto sit next to property, mortgages, retirement accounts and cash, and you manage it all by talking to Claude, ChatGPT or another AI app that reads your statements.

If your main job is tracking a share portfolio and preparing tax reports, Sharesight is a mature, specialised tool. If you want one place for everything your household owns and owes, and you'd rather ask questions than learn an app, Worthbase is designed for that.

## Worthbase and Sharesight side by side

Price

## How does data get in?

This is the biggest practical difference. Sharesight connects to many brokers and keeps trades flowing in with little effort from you. For an active investor with a supported broker, that's a real advantage.

Worthbase deliberately has no sync. You download an export from your broker (or take a screenshot) and give it to your AI. The AI maps the columns, and Worthbase validates every row and shows a preview: new holdings, trades, duplicates skipped, conflicts and whether the result matches the statement. Nothing is saved until you say yes. Re-importing the same file changes nothing. There are step-by-step [import guides](/import/) for popular brokers such as [Interactive Brokers](/import/interactive-brokers/), [CommSec](/import/commsec/) and [Hargreaves Lansdown](/import/hargreaves-lansdown/).

The trade-off: you do a few minutes of work each month or quarter, and in exchange no one holds your broker credentials and nothing changes in your records without your approval.

## What does each one cover?

Sharesight's depth is in listed investments: dividends and corporate actions applied automatically, performance and tax reports, and coverage of 60+ markets. It can also hold unlisted investments.

Worthbase's breadth is the household: a home and its mortgage with an offset account, an investment property owned 50/50, a 401(k) or super balance, a car loan, a crypto wallet and a family trust's share portfolio, all in one net worth figure, in any currency, with daily prices and history. It works out loan-to-value and equity, tracks goals and simulates a sale before you make it.

## How do gains and tax reports compare?

Sharesight offers a capital gains tax report for Australian and Canadian tax residency portfolios, a taxable income report and other country-specific reports, on its paid plans.

Worthbase keeps exact cost bases and calculates realised and unrealised gains and losses per holding and per sale, in any country, with FIFO or specific lots and fees included. It reports gains and losses, not tax: it doesn't produce tax reports or tax estimates, so check tax with your accountant.

## Which should you choose?

### Choose Sharesight if…

- You mainly want to track a share portfolio and your broker is supported for automatic imports.
- You want dividends and corporate actions applied without doing anything.
- You need Sharesight's tax reports, for example the Canadian CGT report, or your accountant already uses it.
- You'd like a free plan for a small portfolio, or you don't use an AI assistant.

### Choose Worthbase if…

- You want net worth for the whole household, including property, loans, retirement accounts, cash and crypto.
- You'd rather hand your AI a statement and ask questions than learn another app.
- You don't want to give any service your broker login, and you want to approve every change.
- Ownership is split between people, trusts, companies or an SMSF.
- You want a weekly email of what moved.

## Questions

Is Worthbase a good Sharesight alternative?

It depends on what you use Sharesight for. If you want a household balance sheet with shares as one part of it, run from your AI, yes. If you depend on automatic broker imports or Sharesight's country-specific tax reports, Sharesight will likely suit you better.

Can I move my Sharesight data into Worthbase?

Yes. Export your trades or holdings from Sharesight as a spreadsheet and give it to your AI, or import your original broker exports instead. Worthbase previews everything before saving, so you can check it against your holdings first.

Does Worthbase sync with my broker like Sharesight?

No. Worthbase never connects to brokers or banks. Your AI reads the exports you download, which takes a few minutes, and you approve each import.

Can I use both?

Yes. Some people keep Sharesight for share tax reports and use Worthbase for household net worth, property and loans.

Sharesight is a trademark of its owner. Worthbase isn't affiliated with Sharesight.

# Net worth spreadsheet vs Worthbase: Excel and Google Sheets

Compare

# Worthbase vs a net worth spreadsheet _(Excel or Google Sheets)._

A net worth spreadsheet is free, flexible and completely yours, and for a simple balance sheet it's often all you need. It starts to strain when you add daily prices, share lots and fees, several currencies, history and a partner who also edits it. That's where Worthbase helps.

[What spreadsheets do well](#good) [Side by side](#table) [Where they strain](#strain) [Moving your spreadsheet](#move) [Which to choose](#choose) [Questions](#faq)

Compared on 30 September 2026.

## What does a spreadsheet do well?

Plenty. You decide the layout, the categories and the formulas. You can model anything: a mortgage payoff, a retirement scenario, what-if tables. It costs nothing, it works offline, and nobody else holds your data. Google Sheets has a `GOOGLEFINANCE` function for many quotes, and Excel in Microsoft 365 has a Stocks data type, so simple price lookups are possible.

If your balance sheet is a house, a mortgage, a retirement balance and a couple of ETFs you never sell, and you enjoy updating it, a spreadsheet may be the right tool. We mean that.

## Where does a net worth spreadsheet strain?

### Prices

Quote functions help, but they cover some instruments better than others, crypto and non-US listings can be patchy, and a formula that errors on one ticker can quietly zero a total. Worthbase prices listed securities on major exchanges including the US, London and the ASX, plus crypto and gold and silver, every day, and tells you when something couldn't be priced.

### Lots, fees and gains

Once you sell part of a holding, you need to know which shares you sold and what they cost, including brokerage. Doing FIFO in formulas across dozens of trades is possible, but it's the part of a spreadsheet most likely to be subtly wrong. Worthbase keeps every lot, applies fees to cost bases and proceeds, and gives the realised gain or loss on every sale.

### Currencies

A US ETF bought in 2021 and sold in 2025 needs two exchange rates, not today's. Worthbase stores the rate for each transaction's date (from the European Central Bank unless your statement gives one), so returns in your base currency are right.

### History

Most net worth spreadsheets show today. To see a chart, you have to copy values into a history tab on a schedule. Worthbase saves a snapshot every day, and if you add a trade from last year, the history is recalculated.

### Two people, one file

When a partner also edits the sheet, formulas get overwritten and rows get pasted in the wrong place. In Worthbase, every change goes through a preview, is recorded with who made it and from which file, and can be undone.

### Silent errors

A spreadsheet will happily add a figure twice. Worthbase detects duplicates when you import a file again, and can reconcile its figures against a statement and flag a difference.

## Can I bring my spreadsheet into Worthbase?

Yes, and it's a good way to start. Give your AI the spreadsheet (or a CSV export of it) and ask it to add your holdings and balances. It maps your columns, and Worthbase shows a preview before anything is saved. Where you don't know the original cost of a holding, it can be recorded as an opening balance with an unknown cost base and completed later from broker exports. You can export everything from Worthbase at any time, so you're not locked in.

## Which should you choose?

### Stay with a spreadsheet if…

- Your balance sheet is simple and you rarely sell investments.
- You enjoy building and maintaining it, or you need custom models.
- You want a free tool with no account.

### Choose Worthbase if…

- You hold shares or crypto across brokers and sell from time to time.
- You have assets in more than one currency.
- You want daily prices and a net worth history without upkeep.
- More than one person looks after the household's money.
- You'd rather hand your AI a statement than retype it.

## Questions

Can I keep my spreadsheet too?

Yes. Your AI can pull figures from Worthbase whenever you ask, and you can export your data as a file from your account page at any time.

Is there a free net worth calculator?

Yes. The [net worth calculator](/tools/net-worth-calculator/) is free and needs no account.

Does Worthbase replace my spreadsheet's what-if models?

Partly. Worthbase can simulate a sale (proceeds, lots used and the gain or loss for each owner) and track goals with progress and pace. For other custom scenarios, a spreadsheet is still a good tool.

# A net worth tracker for _any country._

Worthbase works wherever you live and in whatever currency you hold. Holdings, daily prices, gains and losses, and net worth history work the same everywhere. Worthbase reports gains and losses, not tax, in every country.

[What works everywhere](#universal) [What's country-specific](#specific) [Country guides](#countries) [Questions](#faq)

## What works in every country?

- **Any currency.** Each workspace has a base currency. Every holding keeps its own currency and is converted using historical exchange rates from the European Central Bank, stored on each row, so last year's figures don't change when today's rate does.
- **Daily prices.** Listed shares, ETFs, bonds and REITs on major exchanges (including US, ASX, London and others), crypto, gold and silver.
- **Everything else, by balance or valuation.** Property, retirement and pension accounts, cash, managed funds, private equity, business interests, vehicles and collectibles, plus mortgages, loans, credit cards and tax payable.
- **Exact gains.** Lot-by-lot cost bases with fees included, first in, first out or the lots you choose, and realised and unrealised gains and losses per holding, sale and owner.
- **History and returns.** Daily net worth snapshots, total return including income and fees, XIRR, goals and a weekly email.
- **Your AI does the reading.** Claude, ChatGPT or another MCP client reads statements from any bank or broker; Worthbase validates, previews and stores them.

## What's country-specific?

**Account types and brokers.** Retirement accounts such as super, ISAs and SIPPs, 401(k)s and IRAs, and RRSPs and TFSAs are recorded as accounts, by balance or holding by holding. Each country page links to guides for local brokers.

**Cost basis methods.** Worthbase matches sales first in, first out or against specific lots. Where a country uses another method, such as Canada's average cost (ACB), the figures can differ. Worthbase doesn't calculate tax in any country; check tax with your accountant.

**Billing.** Plans are priced in US dollars, and in the same amounts in Australian dollars in Australia. See [pricing](/pricing/).

No. Your AI reads statements, CSVs or screenshots you share. There are no bank or broker logins in any country.

# Net worth and portfolio tracker for Australia

URL: https://worthbase.app/countries/australia/

[Home](/)/[Countries](/countries/)/Australia

Countries · Australia

# A net worth and portfolio tracker built for _Australia._

Worthbase fully supports Australian households: ASX shares and ETFs priced daily, exact cost bases and gains per parcel, super and SMSFs, family trusts as owners, and mortgages with offset accounts. Billing is in Australian dollars.

[What it tracks](#tracks) [Cost bases and gains](#gains) [Super, SMSFs and trusts](#entities) [Property and offsets](#property) [Importing from CommSec and others](#import) [What it doesn't do](#limits) [Pricing in AUD](#pricing) [Questions](#faq)

## What can Australians track in Worthbase?

- **ASX shares, ETFs, LICs and REITs**, priced daily, alongside US, London and other listings in their own currencies.
- **Superannuation**, recorded by balance from your fund's statement or website, including an SMSF's own holdings if you track the fund in detail.
- **Property**: your home and investment properties, with valuations you or your AI record (with a source and date).
- **Cash**: transaction, savings, offset and term deposit accounts.
- **Crypto, gold and silver**, priced daily.
- **Everything else**: managed funds, private equity, business interests, vehicles, money owed to you.
- **Debts**: mortgages, investment loans, margin loans, credit cards, buy-now-pay-later and tax payable.

You connect Worthbase to Claude, ChatGPT or another AI app once. After that you hand the AI a statement and it records the details; Worthbase previews the change, stores it when you say yes, does the arithmetic and emails a summary each week. See [setup](/setup/).

## How does Worthbase track cost bases and gains?

Worthbase keeps a parcel-by-parcel ledger of every buy and sell: cost base including brokerage, proceeds net of brokerage, first in, first out by default or the parcels you choose. From that it reports realised and unrealised gains and losses for each holding, each sale and each owner, with the acquisition and sale dates of every parcel.

- **What-if sales**: ask "what would we realise if I sold half my VAS?" and see the proceeds, the parcels used and the gain or loss per owner, with nothing saved.
- **Transfers between owners**, such as shares from you to a family trust, can be recorded at market value.
- **Performance**: dividends, distributions, fees and splits are recorded too, so you also get total return and XIRR.

Worthbase reports gains and losses, not tax. It doesn't apply the CGT discount or estimate tax; check those with your accountant. See [cost basis and capital gains explained](/guides/cost-basis-and-capital-gains/).

## Can it handle super, SMSFs and family trusts?

Yes. Every asset and debt has owners with exact percentages. Owners can be people (you, your partner, your kids) or trusts, companies, SMSFs and partnerships, so a discretionary trust's shares, a company's cash and your SMSF's property all sit in one balance sheet, each with its own figures. You can also keep separate workspaces for each entity, shared with different people (your accountant sees the trust, not your personal accounts), and see your net worth across all of them.

A trust is treated as a single owner. Worthbase doesn't model trust distributions to beneficiaries. See [trusts and companies](/trusts-and-companies/).

## What about property, mortgages and offset accounts?

Link each loan to the property that secures it and each offset account to its loan. Worthbase then reports each loan's balance and its effective balance after offsets, and each property's value, equity and LVR, splitting a loan secured by two properties in proportion to their values. Property values are manual: record a bank valuation, an agent's appraisal or an online estimate your AI found, with the source. By default Worthbase flags a property value once it is more than 90 days old. More in [offset accounts, LVR and home equity](/guides/offset-accounts-and-lvr/) and the [property portfolio tracker](/property-portfolio-tracker/).

## Can I import from CommSec, SelfWealth and other brokers?

Yes. There are step-by-step guides for [CommSec](/import/commsec/) and [SelfWealth](/import/selfwealth/), and any other broker's CSV, PDF contract note or screenshot works too, because your AI maps the columns. You check the preview before anything is saved.

## What doesn't Worthbase do in Australia?

- No bank, broker or super fund logins, and no automatic feeds. You share statements with your AI.
- No tax: no CGT discount, capital gains tax or income tax estimates, franking credit calculations or tax return preparation.
- No AMIT cost-base adjustments from ETF and managed-fund annual tax statements. If you hold ETFs, check cost bases against those statements.
- No automatic property price feed.
- No budgeting or spending categories, no trading, and no financial advice.

## How much does it cost in Australia?

The same numbers as in US dollars, charged in Australian dollars: one plan at A$3.99 a month with a 7-day free trial, or A$49 once for lifetime at the launch price. People you invite, such as your partner or accountant, join free. See [pricing](/pricing/).

## Questions

Can Worthbase track my super?

Yes, by balance. You or your AI record the balance from your fund's statement. If you run an SMSF, you can track its individual holdings with the fund as owner.

Does it calculate capital gains tax or the CGT discount?

No. It reports exact cost bases and gains or losses per parcel, sale and owner, with acquisition and sale dates. Your accountant works out the tax.

Is Worthbase a replacement for my accountant?

No. It keeps accurate records so your accountant has exact figures to work from.

# Net worth and portfolio tracker for Canada: RRSP, TFSA, FHSA

URL: https://worthbase.app/countries/canada/

[Home](/)/[Countries](/countries/)/Canada

Countries · Canada

# A net worth and portfolio tracker for _Canada._

Worthbase tracks a Canadian household's balance sheet in Canadian dollars: RRSPs, TFSAs, FHSAs, non-registered accounts, your home and mortgage, crypto and cash. It records cost and gains lot by lot. It doesn't use the average-cost adjusted cost base (ACB), and it reports gains and losses, not tax.

[What it tracks](#tracks) [RRSP, TFSA and FHSA](#registered) [The ACB caveat](#acb) [What else it doesn't do](#other) [Getting started](#start) [Questions](#faq)

## What can Canadian households track?

- **Shares and ETFs** on the TSX, US exchanges and other major markets, priced daily in their own currencies and converted to CAD.
- **Registered accounts**: RRSPs, TFSAs, FHSAs, RRIFs, RESPs and locked-in accounts, by balance or holding by holding.
- **Workplace pensions**, by balance.
- **Property**: your home, rentals and cottages, with valuations you or your AI record, and the mortgages and HELOCs against them.
- **Cash**: chequing, savings and GICs.
- **Crypto, gold and silver**, priced daily.
- **Debts**: mortgages, lines of credit, car loans, student loans and credit cards.

Set **CAD** as the base currency. US-dollar holdings keep their currency and are converted with historical European Central Bank rates on each date. Your AI (Claude, ChatGPT or another MCP client) reads your statements; Worthbase validates and previews them, stores what you approve, does the arithmetic and emails a weekly summary.

## How are RRSPs, TFSAs and FHSAs handled?

Each registered account is an account in Worthbase. Record the balance from your statement, or record the holdings inside it and let Worthbase price them daily. Either way you get history and performance, including XIRR on the holdings.

Worthbase doesn't track contribution room, deductions or withdrawals rules for any registered plan, and it doesn't know an account is tax-sheltered: a sale inside a TFSA or RRSP appears in its realised gains like any other. The CRA's [FHSA page](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/topics/first-home-savings-account.html) and its guides for other plans set out the rules.

## Why might Worthbase's gains differ from your ACB?

For identical properties, such as shares of the same company or units of the same ETF, the CRA requires an **adjusted cost base averaged across all your units**. Each purchase updates the average cost per unit; a sale doesn't change it ([Canada.ca: Identical properties](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/topics/about-your-tax-return/tax-return/completing-a-tax-return/personal-income/line-12700-capital-gains/shares-funds-other-units/identical-properties.html)).

**Worthbase doesn't average.** It keeps each purchase as its own lot and matches sales first in, first out, or against lots you choose. An illustrative example:

ACB (CRA method)

Worthbase (FIFO)

Buy 100 units at $50, then 100 at $70

Average $60 a unit

Two lots: $50 and $70

Sell 100 units at $80

Cost $6,000

Cost $5,000 (oldest lot)

Gain

$2,000

$3,000

Over the life of a holding the totals come out the same once everything is sold, but along the way they can differ. Use Worthbase as an accurate record of every purchase and sale and give it to whoever calculates your ACB and your tax. If you've bought a holding only once, or only ever sold all of it at once, the two methods agree.

## What else doesn't it do in Canada?

- No tax: it reports gains and losses, not Canadian tax. Check tax with your accountant.
- No bank or broker connections; you share statements with your AI.
- No budgeting, trading or financial advice.

There are step-by-step guides for [Interactive Brokers](/import/interactive-brokers/) and [Coinbase](/import/coinbase/). Canadian platforms work the same way: give your AI the CSV or PDF, it maps the columns, and you approve a preview.

## How do you get started?

1. Choose a plan: US$3.99 a month with a 7-day free trial, or US$49 once for lifetime at the launch price, billed in US dollars. See [pricing](/pricing/).
2. [Connect Worthbase](/setup/) to Claude, ChatGPT or another AI app.
3. Tell your AI who's in the household, that your base currency is CAD, then share your statements.

## Questions

Does Worthbase calculate adjusted cost base (ACB)?

No. It tracks each purchase as a separate lot and matches sales first in, first out or by chosen lots. Your ACB-based gain can differ.

Can I track my TFSA and RRSP?

Yes, by balance or by holding. Worthbase doesn't track contribution room or treat these accounts as tax-sheltered in its gains figures.

Does it handle US-dollar holdings?

Yes. Each holding keeps its currency and is converted to CAD at the exchange rate for each date.

# Net worth and portfolio tracker for the UK: ISAs, SIPPs, GIAs

URL: https://worthbase.app/countries/united-kingdom/

[Home](/)/[Countries](/countries/)/United Kingdom

Countries · United Kingdom

# A net worth and portfolio tracker for _the UK._

Worthbase tracks a UK household's whole balance sheet in pounds: ISAs, SIPPs, workplace pensions, general investment accounts, property, mortgages and cash. It records the exact cost and the gain or loss on every holding and sale, and reports gains and losses, not tax.

[What it tracks](#tracks) [ISAs, SIPPs and pensions](#wrappers) [Gains and losses](#gains) [Importing](#import) [Getting started](#start) [Questions](#faq)

## What can UK households track?

- **Shares, ETFs, investment trusts and bonds** on the London Stock Exchange and other major exchanges, priced daily.
- **Tax wrappers**: stocks and shares ISAs, cash ISAs, Lifetime ISAs, Junior ISAs and SIPPs, either by balance or holding by holding.
- **Workplace and personal pensions**, by balance.
- **Property**: your home, buy-to-lets and the mortgages against them, including offset mortgages.
- **Cash**: current accounts, savings, fixed-rate bonds and Premium Bonds (as a balance).
- **Crypto, gold and silver**, priced daily.
- **Debts**: mortgages, loans, car finance, credit cards and buy-now-pay-later.

Set **GBP** as your base currency. Holdings in dollars or euros keep their own currency and are converted with historical European Central Bank rates, so a US ETF in your ISA is valued correctly in pounds on every date. Your AI (Claude, ChatGPT or another MCP client) reads the statements; Worthbase does the arithmetic, keeps the history and emails you a summary each week.

## How do ISAs, SIPPs and pensions work in Worthbase?

Each wrapper is an account. You can record it two ways:

- **By balance**: the value from your provider's statement or app on a date. Simple, and right for most workplace pensions and cash ISAs.
- **By holding**: the funds and shares inside it, with units, so Worthbase prices them daily and you see performance by holding.

Worthbase doesn't track ISA or pension allowances, contributions against limits, or tax relief. It also doesn't know an account is tax-free: a sale inside an ISA or SIPP shows up in realised gains like any other.

## How are gains and losses reported?

For each sale Worthbase records the proceeds (net of dealing charges), the cost of the units sold (including dealing charges and costs you tell it about, such as stamp duty), the dates, and the gain or loss per owner, converted to pounds at each transaction date's exchange rate. Assets owned jointly with a spouse or partner are split by the exact ownership percentage you set. Sales are matched first in, first out, or against the specific lots you choose.

Worthbase reports gains and losses, not tax. It doesn't calculate Capital Gains Tax, and its figures can differ from what you report to HMRC, so check tax with your accountant.

## Which UK brokers can I import from?

There are step-by-step guides for [Hargreaves Lansdown](/import/hargreaves-lansdown/), [Trading 212](/import/trading-212/) and [Interactive Brokers](/import/interactive-brokers/). For any other platform, give your AI the CSV, PDF statement or a screenshot; it maps the columns and Worthbase shows you a preview before anything is saved. There are no platform logins.

## How do you get started?

1. Choose a plan: US$3.99 a month with a 7-day free trial, or US$49 once for lifetime at the launch price. See [pricing](/pricing/).
2. [Connect Worthbase](/setup/) to Claude, ChatGPT or another AI app.
3. Tell your AI who's in the household, that your base currency is GBP, then share your statements.

## Questions

Does Worthbase calculate UK Capital Gains Tax?

No. It reports gains and losses per holding and per sale, matched first in, first out or by chosen lots. It doesn't calculate tax.

Can I track my ISA and SIPP?

Yes, by balance or holding by holding. Worthbase doesn't track allowances or treat these accounts as tax-free in its gains figures.

Can it track an offset mortgage?

Yes. Link the savings to the mortgage and Worthbase shows the effective balance after the offset, plus each property's equity and loan-to-value.

Does it connect to Open Banking?

No. There's no bank or broker connection. You share statements with your AI and approve each import.

# Net worth and portfolio tracker for the US: 401(k) to brokerage

URL: https://worthbase.app/countries/united-states/

[Home](/)/[Countries](/countries/)/United States

Countries · United States

# A net worth and portfolio tracker for _the US._

Worthbase tracks an American household's whole balance sheet in US dollars: 401(k), IRA, Roth and HSA balances, brokerage accounts lot by lot, your home and mortgage, crypto and cash. It calculates exact cost basis and the gain or loss on every lot and sale. It reports gains and losses, not tax.

[What it tracks](#tracks) [401(k), IRA, Roth and HSA](#retirement) [Brokerage accounts and gains](#brokerage) [LLCs and trusts](#entities) [What it doesn't do](#limits) [Getting started](#start) [Questions](#faq)

## What can you track?

- **Listed stocks, ETFs, bonds and REITs** on US exchanges (and others abroad), priced daily.
- **Retirement and tax-advantaged accounts**: 401(k), 403(b), traditional and Roth IRAs, HSAs, 529 plans, recorded by balance.
- **Your home and other real estate**, with valuations you or your AI record, and the mortgages secured by them.
- **Crypto, gold and silver**, priced daily.
- **Cash**: checking, savings, money market and CDs.
- **Debts**: mortgages, HELOCs, auto and student loans, credit cards and margin loans.
- **Everything else**: private equity, business interests, vehicles, collectibles, money owed to you.

Your AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT or any MCP client) reads the statements; Worthbase validates, previews and stores them, and does all the arithmetic. Net worth history is kept daily, and a summary arrives by email each week. The base currency is USD, and holdings in other currencies are converted with historical exchange rates.

## How are a 401(k), IRA, Roth IRA or HSA tracked?

By balance. You give your AI the quarterly statement or a screenshot of the provider's page, and it records the balance on that date. Each update adds a new dated value rather than overwriting the last one, so you get a history. If an IRA holds ETFs you'd like priced daily, you can record the holdings instead and let Worthbase price them.

Worthbase doesn't know the tax character of an account. A $100,000 traditional 401(k) and a $100,000 Roth IRA both count as $100,000. If you prefer to think in after-tax terms, keep them in separate accounts and look at them separately.

## How does it handle brokerage accounts and gains?

Worthbase keeps every purchase as a separate lot, with the purchase amount plus commissions as the cost basis and sale proceeds net of fees. Sales are matched **first in, first out** by default, or against the **specific lots** you name.

Realised and unrealised gains and losses are reported per holding, per sale and per owner. Each disposal lists the lots used with their acquisition and sale dates. Dividends, interest, fees and splits are recorded too, so you also get total return and XIRR.

Tested broker exports: [Charles Schwab](/import/charles-schwab/), [Interactive Brokers](/import/interactive-brokers/) (activity statement) and [Coinbase](/import/coinbase/). Other brokers' CSVs and PDFs work because your AI maps the columns, and you check the preview before anything is saved.

## Can it track an LLC or a trust?

Yes. Companies, trusts and partnerships can be owners alongside people, so an LLC's brokerage account or a revocable trust's home sits in the same balance sheet with exact ownership percentages, and you can give each entity its own workspace shared with different people. See [trusts and companies](/trusts-and-companies/).

## What doesn't Worthbase do?

Worthbase gives you gains and losses per lot, not tax. Specifically, it does not:

- Calculate federal or state tax, or produce tax forms such as Form 8949.
- Use average cost basis for mutual funds.
- Track contribution limits, required minimum distributions or cost basis inside retirement accounts.

Your broker's 1099-B remains the figure you file. Worthbase is useful for seeing gains across several brokers and for lots that moved between brokers and lost their history. It is not tax advice; check tax with your accountant.

## How do you get started?

1. Choose a plan: US$3.99 a month with a 7-day free trial, or US$49 once for lifetime at the launch price. See [pricing](/pricing/).
2. [Connect Worthbase](/setup/) to Claude, ChatGPT or another AI app.
3. Tell your AI your household's members and a USD base currency, then hand it your statements.

## Questions

Does Worthbase connect to my bank like Empower?

No. There's no bank or broker sync and no logins. Your AI reads statements or CSVs you share, and you approve each import. See the [Empower comparison](/compare/empower/).

Does it show when each lot was bought?

Yes. Each realised gain or loss lists the lots used with their acquisition and sale dates. It doesn't calculate tax.

Can I use specific lot identification?

Yes. Tell your AI which lots a sale used; otherwise Worthbase uses first in, first out.

Is pricing in US dollars?

Yes. Plans are billed in US dollars outside Australia.

# Worthbase MCP server for developers _and AI agents._

Worthbase is a personal finance MCP server: a net worth and portfolio ledger that any Model Context Protocol client can read and write over Streamable HTTP with OAuth. Agents parse documents and call strict tools; the server owns validation, arithmetic and the audit trail.

[Endpoint](#connect) [Authentication](#auth) [Tools](#tools) [Resource and prompts](#resources) [Batches and undo](#batches) [Decimal strings](#values) [Errors and limits](#errors) [REST API](#rest) [Questions](#faq)

## What is the MCP endpoint?

https://worthbase.app/mcp

- **Transport:** Streamable HTTP. The server is stateless: each request is handled on its own and responses are JSON, with no session id to keep.
- **Server name:** `worthbase`. The server sends instructions on initialise that tell the agent how to read, write and stay safe; well-behaved clients pass them to the model.
- **Clients:** Claude (web, desktop, mobile), ChatGPT (developer mode), Cursor, Claude Code and any client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth. Clients that only support local stdio servers can't connect directly. Per-app steps are in the [setup guide](/setup/).

claude mcp add --transport http worthbase https://worthbase.app/mcp

## How does authentication work?

OAuth 2.1 (authorization code + PKCE), with Clerk as the authorization server. Clients identify themselves with a Client ID Metadata Document, so there's no client ID or secret to paste, and they discover everything else from the metadata at `/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource`.

1. An unauthenticated request to `/mcp` gets `401` with a `WWW-Authenticate: Bearer resource_metadata="…"` header.
2. The protected resource metadata (RFC 9728) is at `/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource` (also `/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/mcp`). It names the resource `https://worthbase.app/mcp`, the authorization server, and the scopes `openid profile email offline_access`.
3. For clients that look on the resource's origin, `/.well-known/oauth-authorization-server` serves the authorization server metadata.
4. The user signs in and approves. The client sends the access token as a bearer header. Every request checks issuer, audience (the `/mcp` resource, so tokens minted for other resources are refused) and expiry.

A token acts as the signed-in user, with that user's role in each workspace. The workspace needs an active trial or subscription for the agent to read or change it.

## Which tools does the server expose?

Twenty-eight tools. Most take an optional `workspace` (a `ws_…` id); without it, the user's default workspace is used. IDs are prefixed ULIDs (`itm_`, `txn_`, `val_`, `bat_`, `pty_`, `acc_` and so on) and every result includes them. Tools carry MCP annotations (read-only, destructive, open-world) so clients can set approval rules.

### Read tools (read-only)

Tool

What it returns

`whoami`

The signed-in user, their workspaces and roles, their default workspace, and invites waiting for them.

`get_overview`

Parties, accounts, item counts, net worth headline, stale items, open reconciliation mismatches, price run status and recent batches. Call it first.

`get_net_worth`

Assets, liabilities, net worth, investable and cash on a date, optionally for one party and broken down by class, kind, party, account or item. `workspace: "all"` gives the user's own share across every workspace.

`get_history`

Net worth at each month, quarter or year end between two dates, with breakdowns and the change over the period. Points without values are marked partial.

`list_items`

Assets and liabilities with owners, notes and current position: units, price, value, cost base, unrealised gain, staleness.

`get_item`

One item in full: position, owners, links, transactions, valuations, open lots, reconciliations and the batches that wrote them.

`get_performance`

Start and end value, money in and out, income, gain, simple return and money-weighted annual return (XIRR), per item and in total.

`get_debt_report`

Every loan with balance, security, offsets and purpose, plus each property's value, secured debt, equity and LVR.

`get_goals`

Goals with progress, the last 12 months' trend, the projected date and whether it's on pace.

`get_losses`

Tracked losses carried forward (business, capital, rental), with the year each arose, the amount, what's been used and what's left per party. Not counted in net worth.

`simulate_sale`

What selling some or all of a holding, or a whole property or business, would do: proceeds, lots consumed (FIFO or specific), gain or loss per party and the resulting position. No tax. Never writes.

`list_batches`

Recent writes, newest first, with source document, client and status, for review or undo.

`search_instruments`

Find a listed security (Yahoo Finance) or crypto coin (CoinGecko) by name or code, to get the symbol, exchange or CoinGecko id for an item.

### Write tools

Tool

What it does

`record`

The main write. Creates accounts and items and records transactions, transfers, valuations, prices and reconciliation checks together. Previews by default.

`commit`

Saves a previewed batch by its `preview_id`. Fails with `preview_stale` if the ledger changed in a way that alters the result.

`undo`

Reverses a whole committed batch. Previews by default; refuses if the result would leave the ledger inconsistent.

`reconcile`

Checks a statement figure (units, value or cost base) against the calculated one on a date and records match or mismatch.

`update_item`

Changes an item's name, class, subtype, account, currency (before any history), dates, flags, notes or attributes. Undoable.

`set_owners`

Replaces an item's ownership split (must add to 100). Correcting history needs `correction: true`.

`link_items`

Links a loan to the property it's secured by, an offset account to a loan, or a loan to what it funded; `remove: true` unlinks.

`archive_item`

Removes one item from the balance sheet; gains it already realised stay on record. Undoable.

`void`

Removes specific transactions, valuations or prices. Refuses if the ledger would no longer replay. Undoable.

`set_goal`

Creates, changes or archives a net worth or debt goal. Undoable.

`set_loss`

Records, changes or archives a tracked loss (owner, kind, year it arose, amount, amount used, note). Undoable.

`refresh_prices`

Starts fetching the latest prices for a workspace in the background. Prices also refresh daily on their own.

`save_workspace`

Creates a workspace, or renames one.

`save_party`

Creates or updates a legal owner: an individual, company, trust, SMSF or partnership.

`save_account`

Creates or updates an account at an institution: brokerage, bank, exchange, wallet, retirement fund or loan.

`members`

Lists members and invites, invites by email, changes roles, removes members and revokes invites.

`accept_invite`

Joins a workspace the user was invited to, by invite code or invite id.

Roles apply to every call: viewers can read, editors can write data, and admins can also manage parties, accounts and members.

## Which resource and prompts are there?

- **`guide://recording`** (resource, Markdown): how to turn statements, spreadsheets and conversation into items and rows, with worked examples and known import header aliases. Agents should read it before their first import.
- **`import_document`** (prompt): import a statement, CSV or spreadsheet: map it, preview, and commit on confirmation. Optional `description` argument.
- **`monthly_update`** (prompt): go through stale values and record new ones.

## How do writes work: preview, commit, undo?

Every write is a batch. `record` runs the batch in a transaction that is rolled back and returns a preview: new items, rows, duplicates, conflicts, warnings and the net worth change, plus a `preview_id` valid for 30 minutes. The agent shows the preview to the user and calls `commit` only after they confirm; the batch is then saved in a single transaction. Items created in a batch commit together with their transactions, and ids in a preview's `created` don't exist until commit.

record(dry\_run: true) → preview\_id + preview commit(preview\_id) → batch bat\_… saved, net worth before/after undo(bat\_…) → dry run: what would be removed or restored undo(bat\_…, dry\_run: false) → ledger replayed without the batch

- **Idempotent imports.** Each row carries a stable `external_ref` (an order id, or a file hash and row index). Re-importing the same file skips rows already recorded.
- **No hard deletes.** The tools archive, void and undo; nothing is permanently deleted through MCP.
- **Safe undo.** Undo replays the ledger without the batch and refuses if the result would be invalid, for example if a later sale needs a buy being removed. There's no force option.
- **Keep batches small.** One per source document or group of related items, so undoing one mistake never touches unrelated data.
- **Provenance.** Every batch records its source, the user and the client that wrote it.

## Why are numbers decimal strings?

Money, units, prices and exchange rates go in and come out as decimal strings, such as `"1234.56"` or `"0.00350000"`, never JSON numbers, so nothing is lost to floating point. Amounts are the statement's figures, excluding fees, always positive; the transaction type sets the direction. Every amount is labelled with its currency. Rows in another currency can omit the exchange rate, and the ECB rate for that date is used and reported. The agent should never add up, convert or compute gains itself: every figure it quotes comes from the server, and every write result includes net worth before and after.

## What do errors and limits look like?

Errors come back as a tool error with a JSON body: a machine-readable `code`, a message that says how to fix the problem and, where it applies, the field at fault. `refresh_prices` runs at most once per 15 minutes per workspace, and instrument search is rate-limited per user. Gains and losses are reported; the server doesn't calculate tax.

## Is there a REST API?

Not publicly yet. A REST API with scoped workspace API keys, for apps that aren't MCP clients, is coming later. Today, programmatic access is through the MCP server with OAuth.

For a plain-text summary of the product and site written for language models, see [/llms.txt](/llms.txt), or [/llms-full.txt](/llms-full.txt) for the full text of every page.

## Questions

Can I build my own agent on the Worthbase MCP server?

Yes. Any MCP client that supports remote servers over Streamable HTTP with OAuth can connect, including agents built with an MCP SDK. The user signs in and approves access, and the agent acts with that user's role.

Does the server do any arithmetic in the model?

No. All arithmetic runs on the server with exact decimals. The server instructions tell the agent to quote figures from tools like get\_net\_worth and simulate\_sale rather than compute them.

How does the server handle prompt injection in documents?

Text from documents and text stored in Worthbase is data, not instructions. The server instructions tell the agent to ignore instructions found in it and to confirm with the user before committing, undoing, archiving or voiding. MCP clients also ask for approval before tool calls.

Is there an OpenAPI spec or API key?

Not yet for public use. API keys and a public REST API are planned; until then, use the MCP server.

# Annualised return and _XIRR,_ explained.

Annualised return is your investment growth expressed as a yearly rate. If you've added or withdrawn money along the way, XIRR is the right way to calculate it: it weighs each dollar by how long it was actually invested.

[Why simple return misleads](#simple) [CAGR, XIRR and TWR](#three) [Worked example](#example) [XIRR in a spreadsheet](#spreadsheet) [Which one to use](#which) [Pitfalls](#pitfalls) [Questions](#faq)

Updated 30 September 2026

## Why does simple return mislead?

Simple return compares what you have with what you put in:

Simple return = (current value − total invested) ÷ total invested

It ignores time. A 20% gain over one year and a 20% gain over ten years look the same. It also ignores _when_ the money went in. If you invested $10,000 five years ago and another $50,000 last month, most of your "invested" money has barely had time to do anything, and a simple return will make your portfolio look worse than it is. The reverse also happens: a big withdrawal can flatter it.

Dividing a simple return by the number of years doesn't fix it either, because returns compound.

## What's the difference between CAGR, XIRR and TWR?

### CAGR: compound annual growth rate

CAGR = (end value ÷ start value)^(1 ÷ years) − 1

CAGR is correct only when there are no deposits or withdrawals between the start and the end. It's the right tool for a single lump sum, or for describing how an index or a share price grew.

### XIRR: money-weighted return

XIRR (extended internal rate of return) finds the single annual rate that, applied to every deposit and withdrawal on its actual date, would produce your ending value. Because it follows your actual cash flows, it's a **money-weighted** return: periods when you had more money invested count for more. It answers the question "how did _my money_ do?"

### TWR: time-weighted return

Time-weighted return splits the period at every deposit or withdrawal, calculates the growth of each sub-period, and chains them together. Cash-flow timing drops out entirely. It answers "how did the _investments_ do?", which is why fund managers report it: they don't control when clients add money. It needs a valuation on every cash-flow date, so it's hard to compute by hand.

## A worked example

An illustrative investor (any currency):

Date

Event

Cash flow

Portfolio value after

1 Jan 2023

Invest

−10,000

10,000

1 Jan 2025

Value before deposit

12,100

1 Jan 2025

Invest more

−10,000

22,100

1 Jan 2026

Value today

+23,000

23,000

The four measures give four different answers:

Measure

Calculation

Result

Simple return

(23,000 − 20,000) ÷ 20,000

15% in total

Naive "per year"

15% ÷ 3 years

5% a year (wrong)

Time-weighted, annualised

(1.21 × 23,000 ÷ 22,100)^(1/3) − 1

about 8.0% a year

XIRR (money-weighted)

Rate that solves the cash flows

about 7.1% a year

The investments earned 10% a year for two years, then about 4% in the third. TWR reports that honestly: about 8% a year. XIRR is lower, 7.1%, because the investor had twice as much money in during the weaker third year. Neither is wrong. They answer different questions. Your own experience, the growth of your actual dollars, is the XIRR figure.

Check your own numbers with the [annualised return calculator](/tools/annualised-return-calculator/).

## How do you calculate XIRR in a spreadsheet?

Excel, Google Sheets and LibreOffice Calc all have an `XIRR` function. Put each cash flow in one column and its date in the next:

     A B
1 Amount Date
2 -10000 2023-01-01
3 -10000 2025-01-01
4 23000 2026-01-01

=XIRR(A2:A4, B2:B4) → 0.0711 (7.1%)

The rules that trip people up:

- **Signs:** money you put in is negative; money you take out is positive. The final row is today's value as if you sold everything, positive.
- **At least one of each:** XIRR needs at least one negative and one positive value, or it returns an error.
- **Dividends:** if dividends are reinvested, don't list them; they are already in the value. If they are paid out to your bank account, list them as positive flows on the date received.
- **Fees:** fees paid from inside the account are already reflected in the value. Fees you paid from outside count as money in.
- **Real dates:** use actual dates, not month numbers. XIRR counts days.

## Which return should you use?

- **Your own portfolio, with regular contributions:** XIRR. It reflects your decisions, including when you added money.
- **Comparing with a fund or index:** TWR is closer to what funds publish. Comparing your XIRR to a fund's TWR is not apples to apples.
- **A single lump sum, no flows:** CAGR. All three give the same answer in that case.

## What are the common pitfalls?

- **Annualising short periods.** A 5% gain over one month "annualises" to about 80%. Treat anything under a year with suspicion.
- **Leaving out income.** Dividends and interest paid out are part of your return. Price-only return understates it.
- **Mixing internal transfers with contributions.** Moving money between two of your own accounts isn't a deposit into your portfolio as a whole.
- **Currency.** Calculate in the currency you'll spend. A foreign ETF can be up in its own currency and flat in yours.

## Getting XIRR without the spreadsheet

Keeping the cash-flow column accurate for years is the hard part. [Worthbase](/portfolio-tracker/) keeps every buy, sell, dividend, fee and transfer from your statements, so you can ask Claude or ChatGPT "what's my annualised return on the brokerage account since 2022?" and get an answer computed by the server, not guessed by the AI. Worthbase reports total return (capital gain plus income, less fees) and XIRR over external cash flows, for one holding, an asset class, a person or the whole household. It does not report time-weighted return. Past returns don't predict future ones, and none of this is financial advice.

## Questions

Is XIRR the same as IRR?

XIRR is IRR for cash flows on irregular dates. Spreadsheet IRR assumes equal periods between flows; XIRR uses the actual dates, which is what personal investing needs.

Why is my XIRR different from my broker's return?

Brokers often show time-weighted return, simple return, or price-only return that excludes dividends paid out. Check which measure they use and whether it includes income and fees.

Can XIRR be negative?

Yes. If your ending value plus withdrawals is less than you put in, adjusted for timing, the rate is negative.

What is a good annualised return?

It depends on the asset mix, the currency and the period. Compare with a benchmark that matches your mix over the same dates rather than a single headline number.

# Cost basis explained: how _capital gains_ are calculated.

A capital gain is what you receive when you sell, minus your cost basis: what you paid, including fees. When you've bought the same shares more than once, the method you use to decide which ones you sold changes the answer.

[What is cost basis?](#what) [FIFO, LIFO, lots, average](#methods) [Worked example](#example) [Splits and corporate actions](#splits) [Foreign currency](#currency) [Keeping records](#records) [Questions](#faq)

Updated 30 September 2026

## What is cost basis?

Cost basis (called **cost base** in Australia and **adjusted cost base** in Canada) is the total cost of acquiring an investment. For shares and ETFs that is the purchase amount plus the brokerage and other costs of buying. When you sell, your proceeds are the sale amount minus the costs of selling.

Cost basis = purchase amount + buying fees Proceeds = sale amount − selling fees Gain = proceeds − cost basis of the units sold

A negative result is a capital loss. Many countries also care _how long_ you held the units (the holding period), which is why the dates on each purchase matter as much as the prices.

## FIFO, LIFO, specific lots or average cost?

Every separate purchase is a **lot** (or parcel). When you sell only part of a holding, you need a rule for which lots you sold:

- **FIFO (first in, first out):** the oldest units are sold first. Simple, and often produces longer holding periods, but in a rising market it also tends to produce the largest gain.
- **LIFO (last in, first out):** the newest units are sold first. Often a smaller gain in a rising market, but shorter holding periods.
- **Specific identification:** you choose exactly which lots to sell, for example the ones with the highest cost. The most flexible, and it needs good records made at the time of sale.
- **Average cost:** every unit carries the average cost of all units held. No lot tracking, but the gain on a partial sale is a blend.

You usually don't get a free choice. Your country's rules decide which methods are allowed, and some countries mandate one.

## Worked example

An illustrative investor buys and sells the same ETF (US dollars):

Date

Action

Units

Price

Fee

Cost basis or proceeds

10 Jan 2023

Buy (lot 1)

100

$50

$10

$5,010

5 Mar 2025

Buy (lot 2)

100

$70

$10

$7,010

20 Jun 2025

Sell

150

$80

$15

$11,985

The proceeds are $12,000 − $15 = $11,985 whichever method you use. The cost basis of the 150 units sold is what changes:

Method

Units matched

Cost basis

Gain

FIFO

100 from lot 1, 50 from lot 2

$5,010 + $3,505 = $8,515

$3,470

LIFO

100 from lot 2, 50 from lot 1

$7,010 + $2,505 = $9,515

$2,470

Average cost

150 at $60.10 ($12,020 ÷ 200)

$9,015

$2,970

Same trades, three different gains, a $1,000 spread. The holding period differs too. Under FIFO, the 100 units from lot 1 were held for more than two years and the 50 from lot 2 for about three and a half months. Splitting the proceeds by lot shows each part: 100/150 of $11,985 is $7,990, a gain of $2,980 on lot 1, and 50/150 is $3,995, a gain of $490 on lot 2.

Try your own numbers with the [capital gains calculator](/tools/capital-gains-calculator/).

## What happens to cost basis after a stock split?

Nothing happens to the total. A 2-for-1 split doubles your units and halves the cost per unit; the lot keeps its original purchase date. Reverse splits work the other way. Other corporate actions (spin-offs, mergers, return of capital, fund distributions that adjust cost) can move cost basis between holdings or reduce it, and the issuer usually publishes how to apportion it.

## How do you handle foreign currency?

Generally, you convert each side of the trade to your home currency at the exchange rate **on the date of that transaction**: the purchase at the purchase-date rate and the sale at the sale-date rate. Your gain therefore includes currency movement. A UK investor can make a gain in pounds on a US share whose dollar price didn't move, if the dollar strengthened in between. Check with your accountant which rates to use where you live.

## How should you keep cost basis records?

For every lot: the date, units, amount paid, fees, currency and exchange rate. For every sale: the same, plus which lots it used. Brokers report some of this, but they lose history when you transfer between platforms, and they don't know about shares you bought elsewhere.

[Worthbase](/portfolio-tracker/) keeps a lot-by-lot ledger for you. Your AI reads broker statements and records the trades; Worthbase includes fees in cost base, deducts them from proceeds, stores the exchange rate on each row and matches sales **first in, first out** by default, or against the specific lots you name. It reports realised and unrealised gains and losses per holding and per sale. It does not calculate LIFO or average cost, and it reports gains and losses, not tax: check what you owe with your accountant.

This guide is general information, not financial or tax advice.

## Questions

Do brokerage fees count in cost basis?

Generally yes. Buying fees are added to cost basis and selling fees reduce proceeds, which lowers your gain on both ends. Check your country's rules for other costs such as stamp duty or advice fees.

Can I switch between FIFO and specific identification?

It depends on where you live. Some countries let you identify the lots you sell at the time of each sale; others prescribe a single method. Check with your accountant.

What if I don't know my original cost basis?

Look for old contract notes, broker statements or transfer paperwork. Without records, you can't work out the gain accurately, so ask your accountant how to handle it.

Are dividends part of the capital gain?

No. Dividends and interest are income, not part of the gain on a sale. Reinvested dividends, though, buy new lots with their own cost basis and date.

# How to calculate your _net worth._

Your net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe. Add up the current value of your assets, subtract the balances of your debts, and the result is your net worth on that date.

[The formula](#formula) [What counts as an asset](#assets) [What counts as a liability](#liabilities) [How to value each asset](#valuing) [Household or individual](#household) [Worked example](#example) [How often to track](#often) [Common mistakes](#mistakes) [Questions](#faq)

Updated 30 September 2026

## What is the net worth formula?

Net worth = total assets − total liabilities

That's all there is to the arithmetic. The hard part is deciding what goes in each column and what value to use. The rule of thumb: use what an asset would realistically fetch today, and what you would need to pay to clear a debt today. Not what you paid, not what you hope, and not the monthly repayment.

Net worth is a snapshot. It's most useful as a series of snapshots over months and years, because the trend tells you far more than any single number.

## What counts as an asset?

An asset is anything you own that has a value you could turn into money. For most households the list looks like this:

- **Cash:** everyday, savings and term deposit accounts, and money held in offset accounts.
- **Investments:** shares, ETFs, bonds, managed or mutual funds, and crypto.
- **Retirement accounts:** a 401(k) or IRA in the US, an ISA or SIPP in the UK, super in Australia, an RRSP or TFSA in Canada, and workplace pensions.
- **Property:** your home, investment properties and land.
- **Other things with a resale value:** vehicles, precious metals, collectibles, a stake in a private business, money someone owes you.

Leave out things with no realistic resale value, like furniture and clothes. They cost money but won't pay for anything later, and including them only inflates the number.

## What counts as a liability?

A liability is money you owe. Use the payout balance, not the original loan amount:

- Mortgages and home equity loans
- Car loans, personal loans and student loans
- Credit card balances and buy-now-pay-later
- Margin loans and investment loans
- Tax you owe but haven't paid yet

## How should you value each asset?

### Property

Use a realistic market value: a recent bank or agent valuation, an online estimate, or recent sales of similar homes nearby. Record the date and the source, and update it every few months rather than every week. Be conservative; a home's value is only proven when it sells, and selling costs money.

### Retirement accounts

Use the balance on your latest statement or provider website. Some people discount pension balances for future tax, since a traditional 401(k), SIPP or RRSP will be taxed on the way out. Either approach is fine as long as you are consistent and you note which one you chose.

### Shares, ETFs and funds

Units held multiplied by the latest closing price. If the holding is in another currency, convert at the current exchange rate. The value is today's price, not what you paid, which is your cost basis (see [cost basis explained](/guides/cost-basis-and-capital-gains/)).

### Crypto

Units multiplied by a current market price from a major exchange or price index. Crypto moves fast, so a monthly snapshot can swing a lot. That is real, but don't let it distract from the long-term trend.

### Vehicles

Use a private-sale valuation from a used-car guide, and expect it to fall every year. Many people leave cars out entirely. If you finance a car, though, include both the car and the loan, or your net worth will look worse than it is.

## Should you track household or individual net worth?

Both, if you can. Most couples think in household terms: one mortgage, one set of bills. But assets are legally owned by specific people, often in different shares, and that matters for tax, estate planning and separation. A joint account might be 50/50 while an inherited property belongs to one partner outright.

The clean way to handle it is to record who owns what percentage of each asset and liability. Household net worth is the total; each person's net worth is their share of each item added up.

## A worked example

Here's an illustrative household (figures in US dollars, rounded, not real data):

Item

Type

Value

Home (agent estimate, June)

Asset

$650,000

401(k) and IRA balances

Asset

$180,000

Brokerage account (shares and ETFs)

Asset

$95,000

Savings and checking

Asset

$25,000

Bitcoin

Asset

$8,000

Car (private-sale guide)

Asset

$18,000

**Total assets**

**$976,000**

Mortgage payout balance

Liability

$410,000

Car loan

Liability

$12,000

Credit card

Liability

$2,500

**Total liabilities**

**$424,500**

**Net worth**

**$551,500**

Notice that most of this household's net worth is home equity ($650,000 − $410,000 = $240,000) and retirement savings. That is typical, and it's why a net worth figure can feel abstract: most of it isn't spendable. Many people also track **liquid net worth** (cash and investments you could reach without selling the house or breaking a pension) alongside the headline number.

Want to try it with your own numbers? Use the free [net worth calculator](/tools/net-worth-calculator/).

## How often should you track your net worth?

Monthly or quarterly suits most people. Weekly is fine if it's automatic, but don't react to weekly moves. Share prices and crypto move daily; property and pension balances change slowly and usually only when you update them.

What matters is consistency: the same list of items, valued the same way, at regular intervals. When your net worth changes, try to separate **market moves** (prices went up or down) from **your own actions** (you saved, paid down debt, or updated a valuation). Otherwise a good month in the market can hide a savings problem, and a new property valuation can look like progress you didn't make.

## What are the most common mistakes?

- **Using purchase prices.** What you paid is your cost basis, not your value.
- **Forgetting a debt.** The credit card you clear every month still has a balance on the day you measure.
- **Mixing currencies.** Adding a euro account to a dollar total without converting it. It sounds obvious, but it's easy to do in a spreadsheet.
- **Stale values.** A property value from three years ago, or a pension balance from last year's statement.
- **Counting an asset twice.** An offset or redraw balance counted as cash and also subtracted from the loan.
- **Overwriting history.** Updating the value in a spreadsheet cell and losing what it was last month.

## Keeping it up to date without the spreadsheet

A spreadsheet works until it doesn't: prices go stale, currencies get mixed, and history gets overwritten. [Worthbase](/net-worth-tracker/) is a net worth tracker that runs inside your AI assistant. You hand Claude or ChatGPT a statement and it records the balances; Worthbase prices shares, ETFs, crypto and gold daily, converts currencies with historical rates, keeps every past value, and emails you a weekly summary that separates market moves from manual updates. Ownership can be split between people by exact percentage, so you see both household and individual figures.

## Questions

Should I include my home in my net worth?

Yes, at a realistic market value, with the mortgage as a liability. Many people also track a figure excluding their home, because you usually can't spend your home equity without selling or borrowing.

Is a negative net worth bad?

It's common early on, especially with student loans or a new mortgage. What matters more is the direction: a negative net worth that rises each year is a healthy trend.

Should I subtract tax from my pension or retirement balance?

It's optional. Using the statement balance is simpler and most common. If you do adjust for future tax, apply it consistently and note it, so the numbers stay comparable over time.

What's the difference between net worth and liquid net worth?

Net worth includes everything. Liquid net worth counts only assets you could turn into cash quickly, such as bank balances and listed investments, minus your debts, leaving out your home and locked retirement accounts.

LVR (loan-to-value ratio, called LTV in the UK and US) is your loan divided by your property's value. An offset account is savings linked to your mortgage: it reduces the interest you pay, not the loan balance, so your official LVR stays the same while your effective debt falls.

[What is LVR?](#lvr) [Why 80% matters](#eighty) [How offsets work](#offset) [Effective LVR](#effective) [Equity and usable equity](#equity) [Worked example](#example) [Tracking it](#track) [Questions](#faq)

Updated 30 September 2026

## What is LVR (or LTV)?

LVR = loan balance ÷ property value × 100%

A $600,000 loan on an $800,000 home is an LVR of 75%. Australians say LVR; in the UK and US it's usually LTV (loan-to-value). They mean the same thing. The value is normally the lender's valuation, which can be lower than what you think the property is worth, or what you paid.

If a loan is secured by more than one property, the lender looks at the total loan against the total value of the security. When you track this yourself, split a shared loan across the properties in proportion to their values to get an LVR for each.

## Why do lenders care about 80%?

80% is the common threshold where lenders start to treat a loan as higher risk. Above it, you'll typically face lenders mortgage insurance (LMI) in Australia, private mortgage insurance (PMI) on many US conventional loans, or higher interest rates in the UK, where mortgage pricing is usually set in LTV bands (60%, 75%, 80%, 90% and so on). Below it, you generally get better rates and more room to borrow against your home.

LVR also changes without you doing anything. If property prices fall 10%, an 80% LVR becomes about 89%. That matters when you refinance, since a new lender will revalue the property.

## How does an offset account reduce interest?

An offset account is a transaction or savings account linked to your mortgage. Instead of earning interest, its balance is subtracted from the loan balance before interest is calculated. In Australia a 100% offset is common, and interest is usually calculated daily.

Interest is charged on: loan balance − offset balance

Three things people often miss:

- **The loan balance doesn't change.** Your repayments are usually the same; more of each one goes to principal, so the loan is paid off sooner. But the debt on the statement is still the full amount.
- **The money is still yours.** You can withdraw it at any time, which is the difference from making an extra repayment into a redraw facility.
- **It's often better than a savings account after tax.** Savings interest is usually taxable income; interest you avoid paying generally isn't. If your mortgage rate is above your savings rate, the gap widens further.

Offset accounts are standard in Australia. In the UK they exist as **offset mortgages**, offered by some lenders, where savings held with the lender are set against the mortgage balance in the same way. They're uncommon in the US.

## What is effective LVR?

Because offset money is set against the loan for interest, it's useful to look at your position net of it:

Effective loan balance = loan balance − offset balances Effective LVR = effective loan balance ÷ property value

Lenders use the actual loan balance, not the effective one, for insurance and pricing. Effective LVR is a personal measure: how much you'd owe if you swept the offset into the loan today.

## What's the difference between equity and usable equity?

**Equity** is the property's value minus the loans secured by it. **Usable equity** is what a lender might let you borrow against, commonly calculated to 80% of the value:

Equity = property value − secured loans Usable equity = property value × 80% − secured loans

Usable equity isn't free money. Borrowing it adds debt and interest, and a lender will also check that your income can service the larger loan.

## A worked example

For your net worth, the offset is cash (an asset) and the mortgage is a debt: $800,000 + $50,000 − $600,000 = $250,000. Don't also subtract the offset from the loan, or you'll count it twice.

Run your own numbers with the [loan-to-value calculator](/tools/loan-to-value-calculator/).

## How do you keep an eye on it?

A single LVR is easy. It gets harder with several properties, a loan secured by two of them, offsets linked to different loans, and a partner who owns half of one. [Worthbase](/property-portfolio-tracker/) handles this: you link a loan to the property (or properties) that secure it and each offset to its loan, and its debt report shows each loan's balance and effective balance after offsets, and each property's value, secured debt, equity and LVR. A loan secured by several properties is split in proportion to their values. Property values are manual: you or your AI record a valuation with its source and date, and by default Worthbase flags it once it's more than 90 days old. It doesn't calculate usable equity or borrowing capacity, and it never talks to your lender.

This guide is general information, not financial or lending advice.

## Questions

Does an offset account reduce my LVR?

Not officially. Lenders use the actual loan balance, which an offset doesn't change. It reduces your effective LVR and the interest you pay.

Is an offset account better than paying extra off the loan?

The interest saving is usually the same. An offset keeps the money accessible and separate. Extra repayments may be harder to withdraw, and for an investment loan, redrawing can affect what interest is deductible. Check with an adviser if the loan is for investment.

What is a good LVR?

At or below 80% avoids mortgage insurance with most lenders and usually gets better rates. Lower LVRs, such as 60% or 70%, often unlock the best pricing.

Do UK lenders offer offset mortgages?

Some do. Savings held with the lender are offset against the mortgage balance, so you pay interest on the difference and earn no interest on the savings.

# How to track your net worth with _ChatGPT or Claude._

AI assistants are excellent at reading bank and broker statements, and unreliable at adding them up and remembering them. The dependable way to use ChatGPT or Claude as a net worth or portfolio tracker is to let the AI do the reading and connect it to a tool that does the storing and the arithmetic.

[What AI is good at](#good) [Where it goes wrong](#bad) [Pasting numbers into a chat](#paste) [How connectors work](#mcp) [Step by step](#steps) [Example prompts](#prompts) [Privacy](#privacy) [Questions](#faq)

Updated 30 September 2026

## What is AI good at in personal finance?

Modern assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude are very good at the tedious part of tracking money: **reading documents**. Give one a PDF statement, a broker CSV, a screenshot of a pension dashboard or a messy spreadsheet and it will pick out the account, the date, the holdings, the units and the balances, whatever the layout. It can also:

- Map unfamiliar column names ("Qty", "Number of units", "Holding") to what they mean.
- Tell a dividend from a sale, and a fee from a deposit, in a transaction list.
- Look up a ticker, or find a recent estimate of what a property is worth, with a source.
- Explain your numbers in plain language and answer follow-up questions.

## Where does AI go wrong with money?

Language models generate plausible text. That's a different skill from bookkeeping, and three weaknesses matter:

- **Arithmetic.** Adding forty numbers, converting currencies or matching sales to purchase lots in its head, a model can drop a row or slip a digit, and the answer still looks confident.
- **Memory.** A chat is not a database. Conversations end, context windows fill up, and "memory" features store short notes, not a ledger. Next month the AI won't reliably know what you owned last month.
- **Consistency.** Ask the same question twice and you can get two methods: one answer includes the car, the other doesn't; one converts at today's rate, the other at last year's.

None of this means you shouldn't use AI. It means the AI shouldn't be the system of record.

## What are the risks of pasting your numbers into a chat?

Pasting balances into a chat each month and asking "what's my net worth?" works for a rough one-off, but:

- There's no history, so you can't see a trend or what changed.
- Nothing checks the result. If a statement is misread, you won't know.
- Prices are whatever you pasted. Nothing updates them.
- Your financial details sit in chat history on the AI provider's side, under their retention settings.

## How do AI connectors (MCP) work, in plain words?

The **Model Context Protocol (MCP)** is an open standard that lets an AI assistant use outside tools. You add a tool as a custom connector (Claude calls it that; in ChatGPT it lives under Apps & Connectors in developer mode), sign in once, and the assistant can call it during a conversation, the way a person might open another app to look something up.

For money tracking, that splits the work sensibly. The AI reads your statement and turns it into structured rows. The connector checks those rows, stores them, does the maths and hands back exact figures. When you later ask "how much is our net worth?", the AI asks the connector rather than guessing, and quotes the figures it returns.

## How do you set it up, step by step?

Using [Worthbase](/), a net worth and portfolio tracker built for this. It works with Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Claude Code and other MCP clients.

1. **Connect.** In your AI app, add the connector `https://worthbase.app/mcp` and sign in. The [setup page](/setup/) has the exact clicks for each app.
2. **Describe your household.** Tell the AI who's in it and your base currency. If assets are shared, say how ("the house is 50/50; the ISA is mine").
3. **Hand over statements.** Drop in a broker CSV, a PDF or a screenshot. The AI maps it and Worthbase returns a preview: new items, rows, duplicates, warnings and the change to net worth. Nothing is saved yet.
4. **Approve.** Say yes and the batch is committed. Every batch is audited and can be undone later.
5. **Add the rest.** Property values, pension balances, loans, cash. Listed shares, ETFs, crypto, gold and silver are then priced daily.
6. **Ask questions.** From then on, any conversation can ask about your finances, and a weekly email shows what moved.

## What prompts work well?

Here's my Interactive Brokers activity statement for March. Record the trades and dividends.

What's our net worth today, and how has it changed since January?

Split that by person. How much of it is property?

How much would I realise if I sold half my VWRL, and which lots would it use?

Our home was valued at £640,000 by the bank last week. Update it.

What's my annualised return on the Schwab account since 2021?

Check my Coinbase balance against this screenshot and tell me if anything is off.

Set a goal: net worth of $1 million by 2032. Are we on pace?

Notice what these don't ask the AI to do: add things up. Every figure in the answer comes from Worthbase, which uses exact decimal arithmetic and converts currencies with historical rates stored on each row.

## What about privacy?

Worth thinking through before you start:

- **Your AI provider sees what you share.** Statements you upload, and the figures a connector returns, are processed by your AI provider under their privacy terms and your account settings. Check whether your plan uses conversations for training and turn it off if you prefer.
- **No bank or broker logins.** Worthbase never asks for them. You choose which statements to share; there's no automatic feed.
- **Nothing moves money.** Worthbase keeps records. It can't make payments or place trades, so a confused AI can't do either through it.
- **Documents are data, not instructions.** Text inside an uploaded document shouldn't be able to tell the AI to do something. Worthbase returns document text as data and every write needs your confirmation first.
- **You can leave.** Export everything whenever you like.

More detail on the [security page](/security/).

## Questions

Can ChatGPT track my net worth on its own?

It can give you a one-off total from numbers you paste in, but it doesn't keep a reliable ledger or history, and its arithmetic isn't guaranteed. Connecting it to a tracker through a connector solves both.

Can Claude be a portfolio tracker?

Yes, with a connector. Claude reads your broker statements and Worthbase stores the trades, prices holdings daily and calculates gains and returns, which Claude then quotes back to you.

Does the AI connect to my bank?

Not with Worthbase. You give the AI statements or screenshots; there's no bank sync and no bank login.

Will the AI give me financial advice?

Worthbase tells connected assistants not to recommend buying, selling or holding anything. It shows figures, such as a simulated sale, and says they aren't advice.

# Import any broker export _through your AI._

Worthbase imports CSVs, PDF statements and screenshots from any broker or exchange, because your AI reads the file and maps it. Worthbase then checks every row and shows you a preview. Nothing is saved until you approve it.

## How do you import a broker export into Worthbase?

1. **Download an export from your broker.** A transaction history CSV is best, because it has every buy, sell, fee and dividend. A PDF statement or a screenshot of your holdings also works.
2. **Give it to your AI.** In Claude, ChatGPT or another app with Worthbase [connected](/setup/), attach the file and say what it is. Your AI maps the columns into trades, income and fees, and checks the closing holdings against the statement.
3. **Check the preview, then approve.** Worthbase shows new holdings, the trades it will record, duplicates it skipped, conflicts, warnings and whether the result matches the statement. Say yes and it's saved in one step. If something's wrong, undo the whole import later.

Here's my broker's transaction history for 2025. Add it to Worthbase,
check the closing holdings against the statement, and show me the
preview before saving anything.

## What about other brokers, banks and statements?

Any readable file works: other brokers' CSVs, a retirement or pension statement, a loan statement, a property valuation, a bank balance, a spreadsheet you keep yourself, or a screenshot from a banking app. Your AI does the reading, so no import template is needed. Check the preview carefully the first time you import a new kind of file.

## Tips for a clean import

- **One file, one import.** Keep each source document as its own import, so a mistake in one never forces you to undo another.
- **Start from the beginning.** Cost bases need your buys. If you don't have the early history, record opening balances with an unknown cost base and complete them later.
- **Reconcile.** Ask your AI to check the closing units against the statement. A mismatch usually means a missing file or a corporate action.
- **Re-importing is safe.** Rows already recorded are recognised as duplicates and skipped.

## Questions

Does Worthbase connect to my broker?

No. Worthbase never asks for broker or bank logins. You download the export and your AI reads it.

Can the AI get my numbers wrong?

The AI only maps rows; Worthbase does all the arithmetic with exact decimals and validates every row. The preview shows exactly what will be saved, including any mismatch with the statement, and you approve it. If something slips through, undo reverses the whole import.

Are these brokers partners of Worthbase?

No. The broker names are trademarks of their owners, and Worthbase isn't affiliated with any of them.

# Charles Schwab CSV export: import into Worthbase

Import

# Import a Charles Schwab _transaction history._

Export your Schwab transaction history as a CSV, give it to your AI, and Worthbase records the buys, sells, reinvested dividends and stock splits, then works out your cost basis and capital gains.

[What to download](#download) [What Worthbase uses](#columns) [What to ask your AI](#prompt) [The preview](#preview) [Check it](#reconcile) [Questions](#faq)

## What should you download from Schwab?

The **transaction history** for your brokerage account, exported as a **CSV**. On schwab.com it's on your account's **History** page: choose the account, set the date range (from your first trade, for full cost bases), and use the export option. Menu names change; check [Schwab's help and support pages](https://www.schwab.com/contact-us) if you can't find it. If you have several accounts, export each one separately.

## Which columns does Worthbase use?

Schwab's export has `Date`, `Action`, `Symbol`, `Description`, `Quantity`, `Price`, `Fees & Comm` and `Amount`. The quirks your AI handles:

- **Amounts include fees.** A buy's `Amount` is the price times quantity plus fees, and a sale's is net of fees. Your AI separates them, so fees go into the cost base and come off the proceeds.
- **US dates and dollar signs.** Dates are month/day/year, and amounts look like `"-$4,401.00"`.
- **"As of" dates.** Some rows show two dates, such as `07/15/2024 as of 07/12/2024`. The "as of" date is the effective one.
- **Reinvested dividends are two rows.** `Reinvest Dividend` is the income and `Reinvest Shares` is the buy with it. Your AI records both: the dividend counts toward your return, and the new shares get their own cost base.
- **Stock splits show the added shares.** A `Stock Split` row gives the extra shares received (for example 90 shares on a holding of 10), not the ratio. Your AI works out the ratio (here 10-for-1), and Worthbase keeps the same total cost base.
- **Cash transfers**, such as `MoneyLink Transfer`, aren't trades and are skipped unless you track the cash balance.

## What should you ask your AI?

Here's my Charles Schwab transaction history (CSV) since I opened
the account. Add it to my Schwab brokerage account in Worthbase,
including reinvested dividends and splits. Check the closing
positions against my current holdings, and show me the preview
before saving.

## What does the preview show?

The holdings Worthbase will create, the number of buys, sells, dividends and splits, rows already recorded (skipped as duplicates), conflicts, warnings and realised gains from the sells. If you give your AI your current positions, the preview also shows whether calculated units match them. Nothing is saved until you approve.

## How do you check the import?

Compare units per symbol with your Positions page. A shortfall after a split usually means the split row was outside your export's date range. For gains, compare with Schwab's realised gain/loss view: Worthbase uses FIFO by default, so if you chose a different cost basis method at Schwab (or specific lots on a sale), tell Worthbase which lots each sale used and the figures will line up.

## Questions

Does Worthbase log in to Schwab?

No. Worthbase never asks for broker logins. You export the file and your AI reads it.

What about my IRA or 401(k) at Schwab?

You can import trades for an IRA the same way, or simply record the account's balance from a statement. Retirement accounts are usually tracked by balance.

Will Worthbase fill in my tax forms?

No. Worthbase gives the realised gain or loss on each sale to help you check your broker's figures. It doesn't produce tax forms or calculate tax; check that with your accountant.

Charles Schwab is a trademark of its owner; Worthbase isn't affiliated with it.

## What should you download from Coinbase?

A **transaction history** statement as a **CSV**, covering all assets and all transaction types since you opened the account. Coinbase's help centre describes generating a custom statement from the **Statements** section of your account settings, where you choose the asset, transaction type, date range and format. Menu names change; check [Coinbase's help page on statements](https://help.coinbase.com/en/coinbase/taxes/tools/statements) for the current steps.

## Which columns does Worthbase use?

The export starts with a few lines (a title and your user details) before the header row. The columns are `ID`, `Timestamp`, `Transaction Type`, `Asset`, `Quantity Transacted`, `Price Currency`, `Price at Transaction`, `Subtotal`, `Total (inclusive of fees and/or spread)`, `Fees and/or Spread` and `Notes`. How each type is handled:

- **Buy and Sell:** the `Subtotal` is the amount and `Fees and/or Spread` the fee, which goes into the cost base of a buy and comes off the proceeds of a sale.
- **Convert:** one row, for the coin you gave up. The coin you received is only in `Notes` (for example "Converted 0.02 BTC to 0.4 ETH"). Your AI records it as a sale of one and a purchase of the other at the same value.
- **Staking Income:** recorded as income, and the coins received get a cost base equal to their value at the time.
- **Send and Receive** to your own wallets don't change what you own, so they aren't sales. If you track that wallet in Worthbase, your AI can record a transfer between the two.
- **Currency symbols in amounts.** Values look like `A$4000.00` or `-A$950.00`; the test file is an Australian account in Australian dollars. Worthbase stores amounts as exact decimals.

## What should you ask your AI?

Here's my Coinbase transaction history (CSV). Add it to my Coinbase
account in Worthbase: treat each Convert as a sale and a purchase,
staking rewards as income, and skip sends to my own wallets.
Check the closing balances against my Coinbase portfolio and show
me the preview before saving.

## What does the preview show?

New holdings (for example BTC and ETH), the number of buys, sells and income rows, rows already recorded (skipped as duplicates, matched on Coinbase's transaction ID), conflicts, warnings and realised gains or losses. In Worthbase's test file, the convert and a later sale both realise losses. Nothing is saved until you approve.

## How do you check the import?

Compare each coin's balance with your Coinbase portfolio. If Worthbase shows more than Coinbase, a send to another wallet may not have been recorded as a transfer. If it shows less, look for rewards or transaction types missing from the export's filters. Crypto is priced daily from CoinGecko.

## Questions

Does Worthbase connect to my Coinbase account or wallet?

No. Worthbase never asks for exchange logins or wallet keys, and it can't move funds. You export the file and your AI reads it.

How is swapping one coin for another recorded?

As a sale of one coin and a purchase of the other, so Worthbase gives the gain or loss on the coin you gave up and a cost base for the one you received. It doesn't calculate tax; check that with your accountant.

Can I combine Coinbase with other exchanges?

Yes. Import each exchange's export into its own account in Worthbase; your net worth and gains include them all.

Coinbase is a trademark of its owner; Worthbase isn't affiliated with it.

The holdings CSV from the Accounts page is useful for checking the result (see below).

## Which columns does Worthbase use?

The export is laid out like a cash ledger: `Date`, `Reference`, `Details`, `Debit($)`, `Credit($)` and `Balance($)`. The quirks:

- **The trade is packed into one field.** `B 100 CBA @ 100.00` means buy 100 CBA at $100.00; `S` means sell.
- **Brokerage is inside the amount.** The debit for that buy is `10019.95`: $10,000.00 for the shares plus $19.95 brokerage. Your AI works out the brokerage as the difference, and Worthbase adds it to the cost base. On a sale, it comes off the proceeds.
- **Day-first dates**, such as `15/02/2023`.
- **Cash rows**, such as direct debits to your bank, aren't trades and are skipped.
- **ASX codes.** Holdings are created as ASX-listed shares or ETFs in Australian dollars, priced daily.

The export usually has no dividend rows. If dividends aren't in your file, add them from your dividend statements or bank statement for a total return that includes income.

New holdings, the number of buys and sells, rows already recorded (skipped as duplicates, matched on CommSec's reference), conflicts, warnings and the realised gains or losses. Nothing is saved until you approve.

For example, in Worthbase's test file, 120 CBA shares sold in May 2024 come from two earlier parcels (FIFO). The realised gain is $1,112.12. These figures are illustrative. Worthbase reports gains and losses, not tax; check tax with your accountant.

## How do you check the import?

Compare units per code with CommSec's holdings. If a code is short, look for a missing year's file or a corporate action such as a share purchase plan, dividend reinvestment or a split, and ask your AI to record it. For the cost base, compare a holding against your own records or your contract notes.

## Questions

Does Worthbase connect to CommSec?

No. Worthbase never asks for broker logins. You download the file and your AI reads it.

Does Worthbase work out my tax?

No. Worthbase gives the cost base and the realised gain or loss on each sale, parcel by parcel, with each parcel's purchase date. It doesn't calculate tax or apply discounts; check that with your accountant.

Can I choose which parcels I sold?

Yes. FIFO is the default, but you can tell Worthbase which lots a sale used, and simulate a sale before you make it.

CommSec is a trademark of its owner; Worthbase isn't affiliated with it.

# DEGIRO CSV export: import into Worthbase

[Home](/)/[Import](/import/)/DEGIRO

Import

# Import a DEGIRO _account statement._

Export your DEGIRO account statement as a CSV, give it to your AI, and Worthbase records each trade with its transaction costs, then works out cost basis and capital gains.

[What to download](#download) [What Worthbase uses](#columns) [What to ask your AI](#prompt) [The preview](#preview) [Check it](#reconcile) [Questions](#faq)

## What should you download from DEGIRO?

The **Account statement** as a **CSV**, covering the period since your first trade. In the web platform it's usually found under **Inbox → Account statement**, with an export button for CSV. The **Transactions** export (in the same area) lists trades only, and is a good extra check. Menu names change; check the [DEGIRO helpdesk](https://www.degiro.co.uk/helpdesk) for your country if you can't find it.

The account statement is the one Worthbase's tests use, because it has trades, fees and dividends together.

## Which columns does Worthbase use?

DEGIRO labels the columns in your account's language. The test file is Dutch: `Datum` (date), `Product`, `ISIN`, `Omschrijving` (description), `Mutatie` (change, as a currency column and an unnamed amount column), `Saldo` (balance) and `Order Id`. Your AI can read the equivalent labels in other languages. The quirks:

- **Decimal commas.** Amounts are written like `"1.800,00"` (one thousand eight hundred), and a price like `600,5`. Worthbase stores them as exact decimals.
- **Day-first dates**, such as `15-03-2023`.
- **The trade is in the description.** `Koop 5 @ 600,5 EUR` means buy 5 at €600.50; `Verkoop` means sell.
- **Fees are a separate row.** Transaction costs appear on their own row (for example "DEGIRO Transactiekosten en/of kosten van derden") with the same `Order Id` as the trade. Your AI joins the two, so the fee goes into the cost base of a buy and comes off the proceeds of a sell.
- **Deposits** such as iDEAL payments aren't trades and are skipped unless you track the cash balance.

## What should you ask your AI?

Here's my DEGIRO account statement (CSV) since I opened the account.
Add the trades, transaction costs and dividends to my DEGIRO account
in Worthbase. Join each fee row to its trade by Order Id. Check the
closing positions against my portfolio and show me the preview
before saving.

## What does the preview show?

New holdings, the buys and sells (with fees attached), dividends, rows already recorded (skipped as duplicates, matched on the Order Id), conflicts, warnings and realised gains. Nothing is saved until you approve.

## How do you check the import?

Compare units per product with your DEGIRO portfolio. Check that every trade in the preview has its transaction cost attached; a missing fee leaves the cost base slightly low. If units don't match, check for a corporate action (a split or merger) that appears in the statement with a different description, and ask your AI to record it.

## Questions

Does Worthbase connect to DEGIRO?

No. Worthbase never asks for broker logins. You export the file and your AI reads it.

Does it matter what language my export is in?

No. Your AI reads the labels in any language DEGIRO uses. The example in this guide is in Dutch.

Will Worthbase calculate tax in my country?

No. Worthbase gives the realised gain or loss on each sale, in any currency. It doesn't calculate tax; check your local rules with an accountant.

DEGIRO is a trademark of its owner; Worthbase isn't affiliated with it.

# Hargreaves Lansdown CSV export: import into Worthbase

URL: https://worthbase.app/import/hargreaves-lansdown/

Import

# Import a Hargreaves Lansdown _transaction export._

Download your Hargreaves Lansdown transaction history as a CSV, give it to your AI, and Worthbase records the deals with their charges, then works out cost basis and capital gains.

[What to download](#download) [What Worthbase uses](#columns) [What to ask your AI](#prompt) [The preview](#preview) [Check it](#reconcile) [Questions](#faq)

## What should you download from Hargreaves Lansdown?

A **transaction history** for each account (Fund and Share Account, Stocks and Shares ISA, SIPP), downloaded as a **CSV** or spreadsheet, covering the period since your first deal. Sign in, open the account and look for its transaction or portfolio history, where HL offers statements and downloads. Menu names change; check [HL's help centre](https://www.hl.co.uk/help) for the current steps.

HL's quarterly investment reports (PDF) also work: your AI can read them, though a CSV is quicker and is the format Worthbase's tests cover.

## Which columns does Worthbase use?

The export starts with a few lines of account details (client name, number and date range) before the header row. The columns are `Trade date`, `Settle date`, `Reference`, `Description`, `Unit cost (p)`, `Quantity` and `Value (£)`. The quirks:

- **Prices in pence.** `Unit cost (p)` of `9,850.00` means £98.50 a share. Your AI records the price in pounds.
- **Charges inside the value.** `Value (£)` is what you paid or received, including dealing charges. Your AI works out the charge as the difference from units times price, and Worthbase adds it to the cost base of a buy or takes it off the proceeds of a sale.
- **References tell you the type.** Deals start with `B` (buy) or `S` (sell). Rows such as the account management fee aren't trades; your AI can record fees separately if you want them tracked.
- **Day-first dates**, such as `20/06/2025`. The trade date is used, not the settlement date.

## What should you ask your AI?

Here's the transaction history (CSV) for my Hargreaves Lansdown
Fund and Share Account. Add the deals to that account in Worthbase,
converting prices from pence to pounds. Check the closing holdings
against my HL portfolio and show me the preview before saving.

## What does the preview show?

New holdings, the number of buys and sells, rows already recorded (skipped as duplicates, matched on HL's reference), conflicts, warnings, and the realised gain or loss on each sale. Nothing is saved until you approve.

## How do you check the import?

Compare units per holding with your HL portfolio. If they don't match, the usual cause is a deal or corporate action outside the export's date range, or a transfer in from another provider.

Worthbase works out gains using FIFO or lots you choose. It reports gains and losses, not tax; check tax with your accountant.

## Questions

Does Worthbase connect to my HL account?

No. Worthbase never asks for broker logins. You download the file and your AI reads it.

Should I import my ISA and SIPP too?

You can import their trades the same way, or record each one by its balance from a statement. Either way they count in your net worth.

Hargreaves Lansdown is a trademark of its owner; Worthbase isn't affiliated with it.

# Interactive Brokers CSV export: import into Worthbase

URL: https://worthbase.app/import/interactive-brokers/

[Home](/)/[Import](/import/)/Interactive Brokers

Import

# Import an Interactive Brokers _activity statement._

Download your Interactive Brokers activity statement as a CSV, give it to your AI, and Worthbase records the trades, commissions and dividends, then works out cost basis and capital gains.

[What to download](#download) [What Worthbase uses](#columns) [What to ask your AI](#prompt) [The preview](#preview) [Check it](#reconcile) [Questions](#faq)

## What should you download from Interactive Brokers?

An **Activity Statement** in **CSV** format. In the Client Portal, go to **Performance & Reports → Statements**, run the Activity statement, choose a custom date range covering your trades (from your first trade if you want full cost bases) and pick CSV as the format. Menu names change; check [IBKR's guide to running a statement](https://ibkrguides.com/clientportal/performanceandstatements/runstatement.htm) if yours looks different.

A Flex Query CSV also works, since your AI reads whatever columns it has, but the activity statement is the format Worthbase's tests cover.

## Which columns does Worthbase use?

The activity statement is one file with many sections, each starting with its own header row. The first column names the section (`Trades`, `Dividends`, `Withholding Tax` and so on).

- **Trades:** `Symbol`, `Date/Time`, `Quantity`, `T. Price`, `Proceeds`, `Comm/Fee` and `Currency`. Sells have a negative quantity, and commissions are negative.
- **Only the fills.** The `DataDiscriminator` column marks each row as `Order`, `Trade` or `ClosedLot`. An order filled on two exchanges appears as one Order row and two Trade rows. Your AI records the Trade rows only; counting the Order rows too would double the holding. SubTotal and Total rows are skipped.
- **Dividends:** recorded gross from the `Dividends` section, with the ticker taken from the description.
- **Withholding tax:** sits in its own section. Worthbase doesn't track it as a separate figure yet; ask your AI to add it as a note on the dividend if you want it kept.

Commissions are added to the cost base of buys and deducted from the proceeds of sells, so the result matches how IBKR reports basis.

## What should you ask your AI?

Here's my Interactive Brokers activity statement (CSV) for 2023–2025.
Add the trades and dividends to my IBKR account in Worthbase.
Use only the Trade rows, not Order or ClosedLot rows.
Check the closing positions against the statement and show me
the preview before saving.

## What does the preview show?

Before anything is saved, Worthbase shows the new holdings it will create, the number of buys, sells and dividends, any rows already recorded (skipped as duplicates), conflicts, warnings such as rounding, the realised gains from the sells and whether the closing positions match the statement. You approve it, or ask your AI to fix something first.

## How do you check the import?

Compare two numbers with the statement. First, the open positions: units per symbol should match. Second, realised gains: in Worthbase's tests, the realised gain on a partial sale matches the statement's `Realized P/L` to the cent. If yours don't match, the usual causes are a missing earlier statement, a corporate action outside the period, or a lot-matching method at IBKR other than FIFO. You can tell Worthbase which lots a sale used.

## Questions

Does Worthbase connect to my Interactive Brokers account?

No. Worthbase never asks for broker logins. You download the statement and your AI reads it.

Can I import several years?

Yes. Import one statement per period, oldest first. Rows already recorded are recognised and skipped, so overlapping periods are safe.

My account is in a different base currency. Does that work?

Yes. Each trade keeps its own currency, and Worthbase stores the exchange rate for its date, so values and gains in your household's base currency are right.

Will it calculate my tax?

No. Worthbase gives the realised gain or loss on each sale, in any currency. It doesn't calculate tax; check that with your accountant.

Interactive Brokers is a trademark of its owner; Worthbase isn't affiliated with it.

# SelfWealth CSV export: import into Worthbase

URL: https://worthbase.app/import/selfwealth/

Import

# Import a SelfWealth _trade report._

Export your SelfWealth trades as a CSV, give it to your AI, and Worthbase records the buys and sells with brokerage, then works out your cost base and capital gains. Worthbase's first real import was a SelfWealth CSV.

[What to download](#download) [What Worthbase uses](#columns) [What to ask your AI](#prompt) [The preview](#preview) [Check it](#reconcile) [Questions](#faq)

## What should you download from SelfWealth?

A **trade report** exported as a **CSV**, covering the period since your first trade. Third-party guides describe it under your trading account's **Report** section in Settings, with options to include trades, set a custom period and export rows as CSV. ASX and US trades may come as separate exports. Menu names change; check [SelfWealth's help centre](https://www.selfwealth.com.au/) for the current steps.

One tip from those guides: if you open the CSV in Excel before importing, Excel may rewrite the dates. Give your AI the file as downloaded.

## What does Worthbase use from the file?

A SelfWealth trade report typically has one row per trade, with the date, the code, buy or sell, quantity, price and brokerage. Your AI maps those to buys and sells, with brokerage added to the cost base of a buy and taken off the proceeds of a sale. US trades are kept in US dollars, with the exchange rate for each trade's date, so your Australian dollar cost base and gains are right.

## What should you ask your AI?

Here's my SelfWealth trade report (CSV) since my first trade. Add the trades
to my SelfWealth account in Worthbase, with brokerage on each trade.
Check the closing holdings against my SelfWealth portfolio and show
me the preview before saving.

## What does the preview show?

Your AI first looks up your existing SelfWealth account and holdings, searches for any new codes, and sends one batch. The preview then reads something like this (figures illustrative):

3 new holdings; 38 buys, 2 sells Realised gain $3,420 12 duplicates skipped · 0 conflicts Statement check 14/15 match: CSL calculated 10, statement 12

You resolve the mismatch (often a missing earlier file or a corporate action) or accept it, then confirm. If you reject the preview, nothing was written.

## How do you check the import?

Give your AI your current holdings from SelfWealth (a screenshot works) and ask it to reconcile. Worthbase compares the calculated units for each code with your figures and flags any difference, as in the CSL example above.

## Questions

Does Worthbase connect to SelfWealth?

No. Worthbase never asks for broker logins. You export the file and your AI reads it.

Does Worthbase work out my tax?

No. Worthbase gives the cost base and the realised gain or loss on each sale, parcel by parcel, using FIFO or the parcels you choose. It doesn't calculate tax; check that with your accountant.

What about dividends?

Add them from your dividend statements or bank statement. Your AI records them as income, so total return and annualised return include them.

SelfWealth is a trademark of its owner; Worthbase isn't affiliated with it.

# Trading 212 CSV export: import into Worthbase

URL: https://worthbase.app/import/trading-212/

[Home](/)/[Import](/import/)/Trading 212

Import

# Import your Trading 212 _history export._

Export your Trading 212 history as a CSV, give it to your AI, and Worthbase records the trades and dividends with their exchange rates and conversion fees, then works out cost basis and capital gains in your account's currency.

[What to download](#download) [What Worthbase uses](#columns) [What to ask your AI](#prompt) [The preview](#preview) [Check it](#reconcile) [Questions](#faq)

## What should you download from Trading 212?

Trading 212's help centre describes the export as: open the menu, choose **History**, tap the **export** button, then pick the timeframe and the data to include (orders, transactions, dividends and so on). Include orders and dividends, and choose a timeframe from your first trade. Menu names change; check [Trading 212's help article](https://helpcentre.trading212.com/hc/en-us/articles/360016898917-Can-I-export-the-trading-data-from-my-account) for the current steps. If you have an Invest account and a Stocks ISA, export each one.

## Which columns does Worthbase use?

Trading 212's CSV has one row per event, with `Action`, `Time`, `ISIN`, `Ticker`, `Name`, `No. of shares`, `Price / share` and its currency, `Exchange rate`, `Result`, `Total`, `Withholding tax`, `ID` and `Currency conversion fee`. What matters:

- **Two currencies.** If your account is in euros or pounds and you buy US shares, the price is in dollars and the total is in your account currency. `Exchange rate` is the share currency per unit of account currency. Worthbase keeps the holding in dollars and stores the rate on each trade, so values and gains in your base currency match what you actually paid.
- **Conversion fees.** The `Currency conversion fee` is in your account currency. It's added to the cost base of buys and taken off the proceeds of sells. Converting it into the share's currency can produce a fraction of a cent; Worthbase rounds it and says so in the preview.
- **Fractional shares.** Quantities can have up to 10 decimal places. Worthbase stores units exactly.
- **Result.** On sells, Trading 212's `Result` is its own gain figure, which is useful for checking (see below).
- **Dividends** show shares held and the amount per share. Your AI records the gross dividend; the `Withholding tax` column is kept as a note on the row.
- **Deposits and withdrawals** aren't trades and are skipped unless you track the cash balance.

## What should you ask your AI?

Here's my Trading 212 history export (CSV). Add the trades and
dividends to my Trading 212 account in Worthbase, keeping each
share in its own currency with the exchange rate from the file.
Check the closing holdings against my portfolio screen and show
me the preview before saving.

## What does the preview show?

New holdings, the number of buys, sells and dividends, rows already recorded (skipped as duplicates, matched on Trading 212's own `ID`), conflicts, realised gains and warnings, including any fee that was rounded to the cent. Nothing is saved until you approve.

## How do you check the import?

Compare units per holding with your portfolio screen. For sells, compare Worthbase's realised gain with the `Result` column: in Worthbase's test file they match to the cent. Small differences can come from rounding fees converted between currencies; larger ones usually mean an earlier buy is missing from the export.

## Questions

Does Worthbase connect to Trading 212?

No. Worthbase never asks for broker logins. You export the file and your AI reads it.

Does Worthbase work out my tax?

No. Worthbase gives the realised gain or loss on each sale, using FIFO or lots you choose. It doesn't calculate tax; check that with your accountant.

What if my export only covers part of my history?

Import the earlier periods too, oldest first. Overlapping rows are recognised and skipped.

Net worth tracker

# Net worth tracker for your _whole household._

Worthbase is a net worth tracker that keeps a household balance sheet for you: everything you and your family own and owe, in any currency, priced daily and kept exact. You talk to it through your AI assistant, so tracking your net worth means handing over a statement or asking a question, not updating a spreadsheet.

[Start your 7-day free trial](/pricing/) [See the setup guide](/setup/)

## What does a net worth app need to _get right?_

Your net worth is what you own minus what you owe. The hard part is keeping every number current and honest across brokers, banks, pensions, property and loans, often in more than one currency and in more than one name.

- **Everything in one balance sheet**

Shares and ETFs, crypto, gold and silver, property, retirement accounts such as a 401(k), IRA, ISA, SIPP, super or RRSP, cash and term deposits, managed funds, private equity, business interests, vehicles and collectibles. On the other side: mortgages, loans, margin loans, credit cards, buy now pay later and tax payable.

- **Who owns what, exactly**

Split any asset or loan between people by exact percentage. See the household total, or each person's share of it.

- **Any currency, one base**

Hold US shares, a euro savings account and a UK pension in one workspace. Everything is converted to your base currency with historical ECB rates stored on each row.

- **Numbers you can check**

Every figure traces back to the statement and row it came from. Worthbase calculates every figure with exact decimals, and your AI quotes them.

How it works

## How do you track net worth _without a spreadsheet?_

You connect Worthbase to Claude, ChatGPT or another AI app once. After that, your AI reads what you give it, and Worthbase does everything after the reading.

### Hand over statements

Broker CSVs, pension statements, a mortgage statement, a screenshot of a savings balance. Your AI maps them into rows and Worthbase shows a preview. Nothing is saved until you say yes.

### Priced every day

Listed shares and ETFs on major exchanges, crypto, gold and silver are priced daily. Property, retirement accounts and cash keep the last value you recorded, with its date.

### History, not snapshots

A daily net worth snapshot builds your history automatically. Ask for net worth by month or year, by person, or by asset class.

### Goals with a pace

Set a target, like $1M by 2030 or the mortgage paid off, and see progress, the recent trend and whether you're on pace.

### A weekly email

What your net worth did last week, with market moves kept apart from values you updated, so a new house estimate never looks like a good week on the market.

### Nudges when it drifts

Alerts when a value has gone stale or a statement doesn't match what's recorded, with the sentence to ask your AI.

Just ask

## Questions a household balance sheet _should answer._

What's our net worth, and how much of it is investable? Show our net worth at each year end since 2021. How much of our wealth is in property versus shares? What changed this month, apart from the markets? Here's my ISA statement. Does it match what you have? Which values haven't been updated in over a month? Are we on pace for our goal?

What it isn't

## A balance sheet, _not a budget._

Worthbase doesn't connect to your bank, categorise spending or give financial advice. It never moves money or places trades. It keeps an exact record of what your household owns and owes, and answers questions about it. If you want to work out a single figure first, try the free [net worth calculator](/tools/net-worth-calculator/).

Questions

## Net worth tracker _questions._

Does Worthbase connect to my bank accounts?

No. There are no bank or broker logins. You give your AI a statement, export or screenshot, it turns that into rows, and you approve a preview before anything is saved. You can update balances as often or as rarely as you like.

Can I track a household with two or more people?

Yes. Add each person as an owner and split any asset or loan between them by exact percentage. You get the household net worth and each person's share. People you invite, like a partner, join free with the role you choose.

Which currencies and countries does it support?

Any currency and any country. Pick a base currency for the household and hold assets in as many currencies as you like; historical ECB rates convert them. Gains and losses are reported in any currency; Worthbase doesn't calculate tax.

How is my property or pension valued?

Manually, with dated valuations. You record the value from a statement or estimate, and your AI can look up an estimate for a property and record it with its source. Worthbase keeps every valuation as history and tells you when one goes stale.

Can I see my net worth in a web dashboard?

Yes, read-only. The [account page](/manage/) shows net worth, a history chart, holdings and members, and lets you export everything. Changes happen through your AI, so every write goes through the same preview.

# Investment portfolio tracker for shares, ETFs _and crypto._

Worthbase is a portfolio tracker for investors with more than one broker: shares, ETFs, bonds, crypto and precious metals in one ledger, in any currency, priced every day. Your AI reads the broker exports; Worthbase builds the holdings, cost bases and returns from the actual trades.

[Start your 7-day free trial](/pricing/) [Importing from your broker](/import/)

## Why track investments _across brokers?_

Each broker shows you its own slice. If you have US shares at one, a European ETF at another and crypto on an exchange, nobody shows you the whole portfolio, its real return, or what a sale would mean for your gains. That's the job of a multi-broker investment tracker.

- **Built from your trades**

Buys, sells, splits, dividends and interest, fees and transfers between accounts. Holdings and cost bases come from the ledger, so they add up to your statements.

- **Daily prices**

Listed shares, ETFs, LICs, REITs and bonds on major exchanges including the US, London and the ASX, crypto from CoinGecko, and gold and silver, priced every day with history back to your first trade.

- **Multi-currency, properly**

Each trade keeps its own currency and the exchange rate for its date (from the ECB unless your statement gives one), so returns in your base currency are right.

- **Checked against statements**

Ask your AI to reconcile against the closing holdings on a statement. Worthbase compares its calculated units with the statement and flags any difference.

How has my portfolio really done since 2022, including dividends?

worthbase · get\_performance

Across all three brokers, in US dollars (illustrative figures):

**Performance**Jan 2022 – today

Money in, net$84,500

Value today$112,930

Dividends and interest$6,214

Fees$388

Annualised return (XIRR)**9.8%**

What you get

## A stock portfolio tracker that _shows the real return._

A price chart tells you what a share did. Your return depends on when you put money in, what you took out, and what it cost you.

### Total return

Capital gain plus dividends and interest, minus fees, per holding, per asset class or for everything, over any period.

### Annualised return (XIRR)

A money-weighted annual rate based on the dates your money actually went in and came out. See the [XIRR guide](/guides/annualised-return-xirr/).

### Income tracking

Dividends, distributions and interest recorded against each holding, so income counts in your return and shows by year.

### What-if sales

Ask what selling some or all of a holding would do: proceeds, the lots used and the gain or loss per owner. Nothing is written.

### Exact cost bases

Lots are tracked FIFO by default, or you pick specific lots. Buy fees go into the cost base and sell fees come off proceeds. See the [cost basis guide](/guides/cost-basis-and-capital-gains/).

### Re-import safely

Rows already recorded are recognised and skipped, so you can import this year's export over last year's without duplicates.

Brokers

## Which brokers _does it work with?_

Any broker or exchange that gives you a CSV, a PDF statement or even a screenshot: your AI maps the columns, and Worthbase validates every row. There are step-by-step [import guides](/import/) for Interactive Brokers, Charles Schwab, Trading 212, DEGIRO, Hargreaves Lansdown, CommSec, SelfWealth and Coinbase.

Here's my Trading 212 export. Add it and show me the preview. What's my allocation across all brokers? How much did I get in dividends last year? What if I sold half my Microsoft shares? Which holding has the best annualised return?

Questions

## Portfolio tracker _questions._

Does it connect to my broker automatically?

No. Worthbase never logs in to your broker. You download your transaction history, give it to your AI, and approve a preview. Prices then update daily on their own, so you only need new exports when you trade.

What if I don't have my full trade history?

You can record an opening balance for a holding instead, with or without its cost base. Gains from a holding with an unknown cost base are flagged and left out of totals until you add the cost.

Can it track crypto alongside shares?

Yes. Crypto is priced daily from CoinGecko and sits in the same ledger as your shares, with the same lots, cost bases and returns.

Does it handle stock splits and dividends?

Yes. Splits adjust units without changing the cost base, and dividends and interest are recorded as income on the holding, so they count in total return and XIRR.

Will it tell me what to buy or sell?

No. Worthbase shows your figures, including a simulated sale, but it doesn't give financial or tax advice and never places trades.

Pricing questions

## Before you _start a trial._

How does the free trial work?

Start monthly with a card and get full access for 7 days. Cancel any time before the trial ends and you won't be charged. After that, it renews monthly until you cancel. The trial is once per person. Lifetime has no trial: it's a one-off payment and isn't refundable.

What currency are prices in?

US dollars everywhere, except Australia, where you pay the same amount in Australian dollars. Your balance sheet itself can be in any currency: pick a base currency for your household and hold assets in as many currencies as you like.

Do the people I invite need to pay?

No. The workspace owner pays. A partner, family member or accountant you invite joins free, with the role you choose (viewer, editor or admin).

Do I also need a paid Claude or ChatGPT plan?

You need an AI app that supports custom connectors (MCP). Claude supports them, ChatGPT supports them in developer mode on paid plans, and so do Cursor and Claude Code. The [setup guide](/setup/) covers each one. Worthbase doesn't charge for AI usage: your AI app does the reading, and Worthbase does the ledger.

What happens if I cancel?

On monthly, you keep access until the end of the month you've paid for. After that, your AI can't read or change your workspace until you subscribe again, but you can always sign in and export everything.

Is there a free plan?

Not for the tracker itself, but the [free calculators](/tools/) (net worth, capital gains, annualised return, loan-to-value and more) need no account.

This policy explains how Worthbase handles personal information, in line with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

## Who we are

Worthbase is operated by Arigato Consulting Pty Ltd (ACN 657 703 065), New South Wales, Australia (“we”, “us”).

## What we collect

- **Account details:** your name, email address and sign-in information, handled by our sign-in provider, Clerk. We refresh your name and verified email from Clerk so emails reach your current address.
- **Financial records you add:** the people and entities in your workspaces, your assets and liabilities, transactions, valuations, goals, property addresses, tax settings, and the names of the files you import. We don't keep the files themselves.
- **Billing details:** your plan, subscription status and billing history. Card details are collected and held by Stripe, not by us.
- **Connected apps:** which AI apps you've connected and when, so we can alert you to a new one.
- **Technical information:** request logs such as IP address, time and the app you connected with, used for security and troubleshooting.

## How we use it

To provide the service: keeping your records, calculating figures, answering your AI app's requests, managing your subscription, keeping the service secure and contacting you about your account. We don't sell your information, and we don't use your financial records for advertising or to train AI models.

## Emails we send

- **Welcome:** once, when your subscription starts, with setup tips.
- **Weekly digest:** on by default, once a week at 8am your time (Monday unless you choose another day). It includes your net worth and biggest changes. You can hide dollar amounts or turn it off in your email settings, and every digest has an unsubscribe link.
- **Alerts:** security alerts (a new AI app connected, someone joined your workspace) and billing alerts (trial ending, payment failed). You can turn billing alerts off; security alerts can only be turned off in settings. An optional alert for large daily net worth moves is off unless you turn it on.
- **From Stripe:** payment receipts and refund confirmations.

## Who we share it with

- **Service providers that run Worthbase for us:** Cloudflare (hosting, storage and inbound email), Clerk (sign-in), Stripe (payments) and Resend (sending email). They only use it to provide their service to us.
- **AI apps you connect.** When you ask a connected app (such as Claude or ChatGPT) about your finances, we send it the information it requests. That provider handles it under its own privacy policy and your settings with them.
- **Price providers.** To price your holdings we request prices for ticker symbols (for example “CBA.AX”) and exchange rates. These requests don't include any personal information.
- **People you invite** to a workspace can see that workspace's records, according to the role you give them.
- **Anyone else** only where the law requires it.

## Overseas disclosure

Your workspace data is stored in Cloudflare's Oceania region where possible, but our service providers may store or process information outside Australia, including in the United States and Japan. We choose providers with strong security practices and contractual protections.

## Cookies

We use only the cookies needed to keep you signed in (set by Clerk). We don't use advertising or analytics cookies.

## Security

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, each workspace is stored separately, and access is checked on every request. See our [security page](/security/) for more. If a data breach is likely to cause you serious harm, we'll notify you and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner as the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme requires.

## Keeping and deleting

We keep your records while your account is open, so your history stays complete. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete your workspaces and personal information within 30 days, except what we must keep by law (such as billing records, which Stripe also keeps). Backups are kept for up to 30 days, so deleted data leaves our backups within that time.

## Your rights

You can access and export your records at any time from your account page, and ask us to correct or delete your personal information. If you're unhappy with how we've handled a privacy matter, contact us first and we'll respond within 30 days. You can also complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at [oaic.gov.au](https://www.oaic.gov.au).

Property portfolio tracker

# Property and mortgage tracker: _equity, LVR and offsets._

Worthbase is a property portfolio tracker that keeps your home, rentals and mortgages in the same ledger as everything else you own. It works out equity and loan-to-value (LVR) for each property, counts offset accounts against their loans, and keeps every valuation with its date and source.

[Start your 7-day free trial](/pricing/) [Try the LVR calculator](/tools/loan-to-value-calculator/)

## What should a home equity tracker _show you?_

Equity is the property's value minus the debt secured against it. Loan-to-value is that debt as a share of the value. Both need a current valuation, the real loan balance, and any offset or redraw money that reduces what you effectively owe.

- **Valuations with a source**

Record a value from a bank estimate, an agent's appraisal or a formal valuation. Your AI can also look up an estimate for the address and record it along with where it came from. Every valuation is kept as history.

- **Loans linked to what they secure**

Link each mortgage to its property. Worthbase then shows each property's value, secured debt, equity and LVR.

- **Offset accounts counted properly**

Link an offset account to its loan and you see the loan's effective balance, the figure interest is charged on, without double counting the cash.

- **What each loan paid for**

Link a loan to the asset it funded, like a rental or a share portfolio, and the debt report splits borrowing into income-producing and private, as an estimate.

The whole picture

## Property inside your _whole balance sheet._

For many households, property is the biggest asset and the mortgage the biggest debt. A mortgage tracker that sits apart from your shares, retirement accounts and cash only tells half the story.

### Home and rentals

Track your own home, investment properties and land, each with its owners split by exact percentage, for example 50/50 between partners.

### Every kind of loan

Mortgages, home equity and investment loans, margin loans, car loans and credit cards, all as liabilities in the same net worth.

### Stale-value nudges

Property values don't update themselves. When a valuation or loan balance goes stale, you get a reminder with the sentence to ask your AI.

### Market moves kept apart

The weekly email separates market moves from values you updated, so a new property estimate doesn't look like a good week.

### Debt-free goals

Set a goal to bring debt down to a figure, or to zero, by a date, and see whether you're on pace.

### Any currency

A flat in London and a house in Sydney can sit in one workspace, each in its own currency, converted to your base currency.

Just ask

## Questions about _your properties._

Here's the bank's valuation for our house. Update it. How much equity do we have across both properties? What's our total debt after offsets? How has the mortgage balance changed over the last two years? Which property values are more than six months old?

Questions

## Property tracker _questions._

Does Worthbase value my property automatically?

No. There's no automatic property price feed. You record valuations yourself, or ask your AI to look up an estimate and record it with its source. Each valuation is dated and kept, and Worthbase reminds you when one gets old.

How are offset accounts treated?

An offset account is still cash you own, so it counts as an asset. When you link it to a loan, the debt report also shows the loan's effective balance after the offset and the LVR on that basis.

Does it connect to my mortgage lender?

No. Give your AI a loan statement or tell it the balance, approve the preview, and it's recorded. Worthbase never logs in to your bank.

Can it track rental income and expenses?

Worthbase tracks what the property is worth and what's owed on it, and can record income against a holding. It isn't a landlord bookkeeping or budgeting tool, so rental expenses are best kept where you do your tax.

Security

# Your numbers. _Your control._

Worthbase holds some of the most sensitive information you have. Here's exactly how it's handled, in plain language.

[Isolation](#isolation) [Access](#access) [Your AI app](#ai) [Integrity](#integrity) [Payments](#payments) [Your data is yours](#yours)

## Each workspace is its own database

Every workspace lives in its own isolated database on Cloudflare's infrastructure. There's no shared table where one family's records sit next to another's. Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest.

## Only the people you invite

- Sign-in is handled by **Clerk**. Worthbase never sees or stores your password.
- Workspace members have one of four roles: **viewer**, **editor**, **admin** or **owner**. Every request is checked against your role before any data is touched.
- Connectors use **OAuth 2.1 with PKCE**. The token your AI app receives only works for Worthbase, and you can disconnect it at any time from the app.
- Worthbase never asks for, stores or uses your bank, broker or super logins.

## What your AI app sees

When you ask your AI about your finances, Worthbase sends it the answer: figures, holdings and so on. That response is then handled by your AI provider (for example Anthropic or OpenAI) under their privacy terms and your account settings. Worthbase only sends what the tool you called returns, and only to apps you've connected and approved.

Text from your documents is treated as data, never as instructions. Worthbase tells connected AI apps to ignore any instructions hidden in a statement, and to confirm with you before saving or undoing anything.

## Nothing changes behind your back

- **Preview first.** Every import is previewed, and nothing is saved until you (through your AI) confirm it.
- **Full audit trail.** Every row records which file and row it came from, who added it, through which app, and when.
- **No silent deletes.** Your AI and the API can only archive and undo, never permanently delete. Undo re-checks your entire history and refuses if the result would be inconsistent.
- **Exact maths.** All arithmetic uses exact decimals and whole cents, never floating point.

## Payments

Subscriptions are processed by **Stripe**. Your card details go straight to Stripe and never reach Worthbase's servers.

## Your data is yours

You can export everything in your workspaces as a file from your [account page](/manage/) at any time, including after you cancel. To have your account and data deleted, email [privacy@worthbase.app](mailto:privacy@worthbase.app).

# Setup guide: connect Worthbase to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor

URL: https://worthbase.app/setup/

[Home](/)/Setup guide

Setup guide

# Connect in _two minutes._

Worthbase works inside the AI app you already use. You add it once as a connector, sign in, and it's there in every conversation.

**Your connector address**

https://worthbase.app/mcp

You'll need an active trial or subscription. [Start one here](/pricing/) if you haven't yet.

[1 · Connect](#connect) [2 · Your first conversation](#first) [3 · Import statements](#import) [Tips](#tips) [Troubleshooting](#trouble)

## 1 · Connect your AI

Works in Claude on the web, the desktop app and mobile. Once you've added the connector it's available on all three.

1. Open [claude.ai](https://claude.ai) and go to Settings → Connectors. In some versions this is under Customize.
2. Choose **Add custom connector**. Name it **Worthbase** and paste the address:

    https://worthbase.app/mcp

Leave _Advanced settings_ empty; Worthbase registers Claude automatically.
3. Click **Add**, then **Connect**. Sign in to Worthbase with the same email you used for your subscription, and approve access.
4. In a chat, open the + menu → **Connectors** and make sure Worthbase is switched on.

Claude asks before it uses a tool. You can set the read-only tools (net worth, lists, reports) to **Always allow** and keep writes on **Needs approval**.

ChatGPT supports custom connectors through **developer mode**, available on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans.

1. Open ChatGPT, click your avatar → Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced settings, and turn on **Developer mode**.
2. Back in Apps & Connectors, choose **Create**. Name it **Worthbase**, set the connector URL to:

    https://worthbase.app/mcp

    and choose **OAuth** for authentication.
3. Click **Create**, sign in to Worthbase, and approve access.
4. In a new chat, open + → **More** → **Developer mode** and choose Worthbase.

1. Open Cursor Settings → MCP → **Add new MCP server**, or edit `~/.cursor/mcp.json` directly:

    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "worthbase": { "url": "https://worthbase.app/mcp" }
      }
    }

2. Cursor shows **Needs login** next to Worthbase. Click it, sign in, and approve access.

1. In your terminal:

claude mcp add --transport http worthbase https://worthbase.app/mcp

2. Start Claude Code, run `/mcp`, select **worthbase** and choose **Authenticate**. Your browser opens to sign in.

Any app that supports **remote MCP servers** over Streamable HTTP with OAuth can use Worthbase. Give it:

- **Server URL:** `https://worthbase.app/mcp`
- **Authentication:** OAuth. The app discovers everything it needs from the URL. There's no client ID or secret to paste.

Apps that only support local (stdio) servers can't connect directly.

## 2 · Your first conversation

Start by telling your AI who owns what. It adds the people (and any trust or company) that own your assets, so every holding can be split exactly between them:

Set up Worthbase for our family: me (Alex) and my partner Sam.
Then show me the overview.

Your AI adds people and entities with `save_party` and shows you the overview. Worthbase is a record-keeping tool: it keeps your numbers exact, but it doesn't calculate tax or give advice.

## 3 · Import your statements

Attach a file and say what it is. Good first files:

- **Broker export** (CommSec, SelfWealth, Stake, Pearler…): the transaction history CSV. Worthbase builds your holdings and cost bases from the trades.
- **Super statement**: your balance on the statement date.
- **Property**: a recent valuation or bank estimate.
- **Loans and offsets**: the current balances, plus which loan belongs to which property.

Here's my SelfWealth transaction export. Import it into my portfolio,
owned 100% by me. Show me the preview first.

You'll see a **preview**: new holdings, trades, anything already recorded (skipped automatically), any conflicts, and whether the totals match the statement. Nothing is saved until you say so.

**Tip:** ask your AI to reconcile against the closing holdings on the statement. Worthbase then checks its calculated units against the statement and flags any difference.

## Tips

- **Import the whole history** when you can. Worthbase needs the buys to calculate cost bases and capital gains. If you don't have them, tell your AI and it can record opening balances instead.
- **Re-importing is safe.** Rows already recorded are recognised and skipped, so you can import an updated export over an old one.
- **Made a mistake?** Ask to undo the last import. Worthbase shows what would change and refuses if later records depend on it.
- **Keep manual values fresh.** Ask “what's stale?” once a month and update your property, super and cash balances.

## Troubleshooting

### Sign-in finishes but the connector says it can't connect

Check that you're signed in with the email that has the subscription, and that your trial or subscription is active on your [account page](/manage/).

### The AI says it doesn't have Worthbase tools

Make sure the connector is switched on for this conversation. In Claude use + → Connectors; in ChatGPT use + → More → Developer mode.

### The numbers don't match my statement

Ask your AI to reconcile the item against the statement. The most common causes are a missing early trade, a share split, or an opening balance that needs its cost base.

Still stuck? Email [support@worthbase.app](mailto:support@worthbase.app).

These terms apply when you use Worthbase. By creating an account or starting a subscription you agree to them. If you use Worthbase for a business, trust or other entity, you confirm you're authorised to agree on its behalf.

## Who we are

Worthbase is operated by Arigato Consulting Pty Ltd (ACN 657 703 065), a company registered in New South Wales, Australia (“we”, “us”). You can reach us at [support@worthbase.app](mailto:support@worthbase.app).

## The service

Worthbase is an online tool for recording and reporting what you, your household and the entities you manage own and owe. You use it through AI apps that support connectors (such as Claude and ChatGPT), through your account page, and through our API. It prices listed holdings daily, keeps a history of your records and sends the emails described in our [privacy policy](/privacy/).

You must be 18 or older to create an account.

## Not financial or tax advice

Worthbase is a record-keeping and information tool. Nothing in it is financial product advice, investment, legal or tax advice, and we don't hold an Australian financial services licence. We don't consider your objectives, financial situation or needs. Gains, losses and projected figures are calculated from what you've recorded and may not reflect your actual position. Worthbase doesn't calculate tax. Check with a qualified adviser or accountant before making decisions or lodging returns.

Figures depend on the information you and your AI app provide, and on third-party prices, exchange rates and estimates that may be delayed, incomplete or wrong.

## AI apps

AI apps are provided by third parties under their own terms, and we don't control them. They can misread documents or make mistakes. Worthbase checks every change it's asked to make, shows you a preview before anything is saved, and lets you undo a change, but you're responsible for reviewing the previews you approve. Only connect AI apps you trust; a connected app can read and change your workspaces as you until you disconnect it.

## Plans, trial and payment

- Worthbase is a paid service. Prices are shown on our [pricing section](/#pricing) in US dollars, or Australian dollars for customers in Australia, and include any applicable taxes. Payments are processed by Stripe.
- You can pay monthly (a subscription) or once for lifetime access.
- New monthly subscriptions start with a 7-day free trial, once per customer. A payment card is required to start it.
- If you don't cancel before the trial ends, your subscription starts and you're charged monthly. It renews automatically at the end of each month until you cancel. We email you before your trial ends.
- Lifetime is a one-off payment for access to Worthbase for as long as we operate it, with the features of the plan at the time. It isn't refundable, except where the law requires it. Buying lifetime while on monthly cancels your monthly subscription straight away, with no further charges.
- You can cancel a monthly subscription any time from your account page (Plan & billing). Cancelling stops future renewals, and you keep access until the end of the month you've paid for, or the end of your trial. Payments already made aren't refunded, except where the law requires it.

## How these calculators work

Each one runs entirely in your browser. Money is added and multiplied with exact decimal arithmetic and rounded to the cent only for display, so totals add up. Each page explains the formula it uses, walks through an example and lists what it doesn't cover.

They're built by [Worthbase](/), which does the same calculations continuously for everything your household owns and owes. It runs inside your AI assistant: you share a broker statement, bank statement or screenshot, and Worthbase records it, prices your holdings daily and keeps every cost base, gain and return exact.

These tools give general information, not financial or tax advice.

# XIRR calculator: annualised return with deposits and withdrawals

URL: https://worthbase.app/tools/annualised-return-calculator/

# Annualised return _(XIRR) calculator._

Your annualised return is the steady yearly rate that would turn every deposit and withdrawal you made into today's value. This XIRR calculator works it out from dated cash flows, so money added last month doesn't count as if it had been invested for years.

[How XIRR works](#how) [XIRR, CAGR, TWR](#compare) [Worked example](#example) [Limitations](#limits) [Questions](#faq)

## How is annualised return calculated with XIRR?

XIRR finds the one yearly rate _r_ at which the value of everything you put in equals the value of everything you got back, with each cash flow discounted by how long ago it happened.

Σ amountᵢ ÷ (1 + r)^(daysᵢ ÷ 365) = 0 amountᵢ negative for money in, positive for money out and today's value daysᵢ days from the first cash flow to this one

There's no formula that solves this directly, so the calculator searches for _r_: it uses Newton–Raphson (fast, usually a few steps) and falls back to bisection if that doesn't settle. It counts actual days over a 365-day year, the same convention as the XIRR function in Excel and Google Sheets, so the results should match a spreadsheet.

It also shows the **simple total return**: your gain divided by the money you put in. That ignores timing, which is exactly why the two figures differ.

## XIRR vs CAGR vs time-weighted return

Measure

What it answers

Use it when

CAGR

The yearly growth from one starting value to one ending value

There were no deposits or withdrawals in between

XIRR (money-weighted)

How your money did, including when you added or took it out

You want your own return, timing decisions included

Time-weighted return

How the investment did, ignoring the size and timing of your flows

Comparing a fund or manager against an index

With a single deposit and no withdrawals, XIRR and CAGR are the same number. When you add money just before a rise, XIRR comes out above the time-weighted return; add it just before a fall and it comes out below. The [guide to annualised return and XIRR](/guides/annualised-return-xirr/) goes through each in more detail.

## Worked example

The pre-filled figures are illustrative: 10,000 invested in January 2021, 5,000 more in July 2022, 2,000 withdrawn in March 2024, 3,000 added in February 2025, and a value of 21,500 on 30 September 2026.

money in = 10,000 + 5,000 + 3,000 = 18,000 money out = 2,000 gain = 21,500 + 2,000 − 18,000 = 5,500 simple total return = 5,500 ÷ 18,000 = 30.6% XIRR ≈ 6.16% a year

The simple return looks high because it treats the 3,000 added in 2025 as if it had been invested since 2021. XIRR weights each amount by the time it was actually invested. (The valuation date in the calculator starts at today, so your result for the same figures will drift slightly from this one.)

A simpler check: 10,000 growing to 15,000 over exactly five years is a CAGR of 1.5^(1/5) − 1 = 8.45%. XIRR gives 8.44%, because five calendar years include a leap day and XIRR divides days by 365.

## Limitations

- It needs every cash flow, dated. Leave out a deposit and the return will look better than it was.
- Dividends you reinvested aren't cash flows: they're already in the current value. Dividends paid out to you are money out.
- Over periods shorter than a year, an annualised figure exaggerates: a 3% gain in two months annualises to about 19%.
- With unusual patterns (large withdrawals followed by more deposits), there can be more than one rate that fits, or none. The calculator shows n/a when it can't find one.
- It doesn't account for tax, inflation or currency movements.

## Questions

What is a good annualised return?

It depends on what you hold and the period. Compare your XIRR with what a simple index fund in the same asset class returned over the same dates. That tells you more than any fixed number.

Why is my XIRR different from my broker's return?

Brokers often show a time-weighted return, or a simple return on cost, or exclude fees and income. XIRR reflects the timing of your own deposits, so it can be higher or lower. Make sure the cash flows and value date match what the broker used.

Is XIRR the same as IRR?

It's the same idea. IRR assumes cash flows at regular intervals (say, one per year); XIRR uses the actual date of each one, which is what real investing looks like.

Should I include dividends?

Yes, as money out if they were paid to you in cash. If they were reinvested, don't enter them: they're already part of the current value.

Can XIRR be negative?

Yes. If the current value plus withdrawals is less than what you put in, the annualised return is negative.

# Capital gains calculator: cost basis by FIFO, LIFO or average

URL: https://worthbase.app/tools/capital-gains-calculator/

[Home](/)/[Free tools](/tools/)/Capital gains calculator

Free tools

# Capital gains and _cost basis calculator._

A capital gain is what you sold for, less fees, minus what those units cost you. This capital gains calculator matches a sale against your earlier buys by FIFO, LIFO or average cost and shows the cost basis, gain and holding period of every lot used.

[How it works](#how) [FIFO, LIFO, average](#methods) [Worked example](#example) [Limitations](#limits) [Questions](#faq)

## How is a capital gain calculated?

Each buy creates a **lot**: a parcel of units with its own date and cost. When you sell, the sale is matched against one or more lots, and the gain is the sale proceeds minus the cost of the units matched.

cost base of a lot = units × price + buy fees proceeds of the sale = units × price − sell fees gain or loss = proceeds − cost base of the units sold

When a sale uses part of a lot, the lot's cost is shared out per unit: selling 20 of 50 units uses 20/50 of that lot's cost, fees included. Proceeds are split across the lots used in proportion to units, so you can see the gain on each. Every figure is worked out exactly and rounded to the cent, and the lot figures always add up to the totals.

The holding period is counted for each lot. A lot sold more than one year after it was bought is marked long term. Some countries treat long-term gains differently, and the exact test varies, so check with your accountant.

## FIFO, LIFO or average cost: which should you use?

Where you live often decides, not you, so check with your accountant. The method changes which units count as sold, and so the size of the gain and how much of it is long term.

Method

Units sold first

What it does

FIFO

The oldest

A common default at brokers worldwide. In a rising market it tends to give the biggest gain, with more of it held long term.

LIFO

The newest

Often a smaller gain in a rising market, with shorter holding periods. Useful for seeing the other extreme.

Average cost

Every unit costs the same

No lot tracking: each unit sold carries the average cost of all units held, so the gain is a blend.

With average cost, the calculator still dates the units oldest first so it can show holding periods.

## Worked example

The pre-filled figures are illustrative. You bought 100 units at 42.50 in March 2021, 50 at 38.00 in June 2022 and 60 at 55.20 in November 2025, paying 9.95 in fees each time. On 30 June 2026 you sell 120 units at 61.00, also paying 9.95.

proceeds = 120 × 61.00 − 9.95 = 7,310.05 FIFO: 100 from 2021 (4,259.95) + 20 of 50 from 2022 (763.98) cost base 5,023.93 → gain 2,286.12, all long term LIFO: 60 from 2025 (3,321.95) + 50 from 2022 (1,909.95) + 10 from 2021 (426.00) cost base 5,657.90 → gain 1,652.15, of which 333.08 short term Average: 9,491.85 ÷ 210 units = 45.199 per unit × 120 cost base 5,423.91 → gain 1,886.14

Same sale, three different gains. That's why you need to know which method applies to you and to keep a record of the lots left over, which set the cost base of your next sale.

## What this calculator doesn't model

- **Specific-lot identification**, where you choose exactly which lots a sale uses.
- **Country-specific matching rules**, such as matching a sale with buys made shortly before or after it.
- **Corporate actions** such as splits, return of capital or reinvested distributions that adjust cost base.
- **Currency.** Everything is in one currency. For a foreign share, each buy and sale is generally converted at the rate on its own date.
- **Tax.** It shows the gain or loss, not the tax on it. Check tax with your accountant.

This is general information, not financial or tax advice. For more depth, read the [guide to cost basis and capital gains](/guides/cost-basis-and-capital-gains/).

## Questions

What is cost basis?

Cost basis (called cost base in Australia) is what you paid for an investment, including costs of buying it such as brokerage. It's what you subtract from the sale proceeds to work out a gain or loss.

Are brokerage fees included in the cost basis?

In most countries, yes: fees to buy are added to the cost base, and fees to sell are taken off the proceeds. The calculator does both.

What does FIFO mean for shares?

First in, first out: when you sell, the units you bought earliest are treated as sold first. Because older units have often risen the most, FIFO tends to give a bigger gain, but also more of it held long term.

What counts as long term?

In this calculator, a lot sold more than one year after it was bought. Countries that care about holding periods have their own tests, so check with your accountant.

Can I work out a capital loss?

Yes. If the proceeds are less than the cost base of the units sold, the result is a loss, shown in red. How you can use a loss is a tax question for your accountant.

URL: https://worthbase.app/tools/loan-to-value-calculator/

Free tools

# Loan-to-value and _home equity calculator._

Loan-to-value ratio (LVR, or LTV) is what you owe on a property divided by what it's worth. This LVR calculator shows your LVR, the effect of an offset or redraw balance, your equity, and how much of it a lender might let you use.

[How it works](#how) [Offsets and redraw](#offset) [Worked example](#example) [Limitations](#limits) [Questions](#faq)

## How do you calculate loan-to-value ratio?

Divide the total you owe against the property by its current value. In Australia and New Zealand it's usually called LVR; in the US, UK and Canada, LTV. They're the same thing.

LVR (LTV) = total loans ÷ property value equity = property value − total loans usable equity = property value × max LVR − total loans (never below zero)

**Usable equity** is the part of your equity you could borrow against without going over the lender's limit, often 80%. It's the figure that matters if you're thinking of using your home's equity for a renovation or a deposit on another property. The limit is editable because lenders and loan types differ.

## How do offset and redraw balances change it?

Money in an offset account (or available in redraw) reduces the balance you pay interest on, but not the loan itself. So the calculator shows two figures:

effective LVR = (total loans − offset) ÷ property value

Lenders generally use the full loan balance for their LVR, so usable equity here is based on the full balance. The effective LVR is closer to your real position: if you used the offset to pay down the loan tomorrow, that's where you'd be. The [guide to offset accounts and LVR](/guides/offset-accounts-and-lvr/) explains the difference.

## Worked example

The pre-filled figures are illustrative: a property worth 850,000, a 520,000 home loan, a 40,000 top-up split, and 35,000 sitting in an offset account.

total loans = 520,000 + 40,000 = 560,000 LVR = 560,000 ÷ 850,000 = 65.9% effective LVR = 525,000 ÷ 850,000 = 61.8% equity = 850,000 − 560,000 = 290,000 usable at 80% = 850,000 × 80% − 560,000 = 120,000

Of 290,000 in equity, about 120,000 could be borrowed against before reaching 80%. The rest is the buffer lenders want to keep.

## Limitations

- The result depends on the property value you enter. A lender will use its own valuation, which is often more conservative than online estimates.
- Usable equity isn't the same as what you can borrow. Lenders also assess your income, expenses and other debts.
- It covers one property. If loans are secured across several properties, add up all the values and all the loans for an overall LVR.
- It doesn't include selling costs or tax, so your equity isn't what you'd walk away with after a sale.

## Questions

What is a good LVR?

80% or less is the usual benchmark. Above that, many lenders charge mortgage insurance (LMI in Australia, PMI in the US) or a higher rate. Below 60% often gets the best rates.

Is LVR the same as LTV?

Yes. Loan-to-value ratio (LVR) is the common term in Australia and New Zealand; loan-to-value (LTV) is used in the US, UK and Canada. Both are loans divided by value.

Does an offset account reduce my LVR?

Not for the lender: the loan balance is unchanged. It does reduce your effective LVR and the interest you pay, and you can use it to pay down the loan at any time, which is why the calculator shows both.

How much equity can I borrow against?

Roughly the property value times the lender's maximum LVR, minus what you already owe. With a 900,000 home, an 80% limit and a 500,000 loan, that's 220,000, subject to the lender's valuation and your ability to repay.

How do I find my property's value?

Recent sales of similar properties nearby, an online estimate, or a bank valuation. Update it once or twice a year rather than chasing daily estimates.

# Net worth calculator: add up assets and debts in seconds

URL: https://worthbase.app/tools/net-worth-calculator/

[Home](/)/[Free tools](/tools/)/Net worth calculator

Free tools

# Net worth _calculator._

Your net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe. Use this net worth calculator to list your assets and liabilities and see the total, with a breakdown by category. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

[How it works](#how) [What to include](#what-counts) [Worked example](#example) [Limitations](#limits) [Questions](#faq)

## How do you calculate net worth?

Add up the current value of everything you own, add up the balance of everything you owe, and subtract the second figure from the first.

net worth = total assets − total liabilities debt to assets = total liabilities ÷ total assets

The calculator adds your rows exactly (to the cent), groups them by category and shows each category's share of your assets or your debts. The currency selector only changes the symbol: it doesn't convert anything, so enter every amount in the same currency.

Debt to assets is a quick health check. Under 50% means you own more than twice what you owe. A high figure is normal early in a mortgage and falls as you pay it down and the property grows in value.

## What should you include?

- **Property** at what it would sell for today, not what you paid. Use a recent estimate or valuation.
- **Cash**: everyday, savings and offset accounts, term deposits.
- **Retirement accounts** such as a 401(k), IRA, ISA, SIPP, RRSP or super, at the latest balance.
- **Investments**: shares, ETFs, funds and crypto at today's market value.
- **Vehicles and valuables** at resale value, if they're worth enough to matter.
- **Debts**: the balance owing on mortgages, car loans, student loans, personal loans and credit cards (the statement balance, not the credit limit).

Leave out things you can't sell (your salary, an expected inheritance) and everyday spending. The [guide to calculating net worth](/guides/how-to-calculate-net-worth/) covers the edge cases, like joint assets and unvested shares.

## Worked example

The figures pre-filled above are illustrative. A household with a home worth 650,000, 25,000 in savings, 180,000 across retirement accounts, 40,000 in shares and an 18,000 car has 913,000 of assets. Against that it owes 420,000 on the mortgage, 9,000 on a car loan and 2,500 on a credit card: 431,500 in total.

913,000 − 431,500 = 481,500 net worth 431,500 ÷ 913,000 = 47.3% debt to assets

Property is 71% of the assets here, which is typical: for many households, net worth is mostly home equity and retirement savings.

## What this calculator doesn't do

- It's a snapshot. It doesn't save anything, so there's no history to compare against next month.
- It doesn't convert currencies. If you hold assets in several currencies, convert them first.
- It doesn't value anything for you: the result is only as good as the figures you enter.
- It doesn't handle shared ownership. If you own a property 50/50 with a partner, enter your half, or enter the whole household.

Tracking it over time is where net worth becomes useful. [Worthbase](/net-worth-tracker/) keeps a household balance sheet inside your AI assistant: it reads your statements, prices shares and crypto daily, handles several currencies and exact ownership splits, and emails you what moved each week.

## Questions

What is a good net worth for my age?

There's no single good number: it depends on your income, where you live, housing costs and how long you've been saving. A more useful test is whether your own net worth is rising year on year. Official surveys of household wealth (such as the US Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances or the ABS in Australia) publish medians by age if you want a reference point.

Should I include my home in my net worth?

Yes. Net worth includes your home at its current value, with the mortgage as a liability. Some people also track a figure without the home to see what's available to invest or retire on. You can do both by reading the category breakdown.

Do retirement accounts count towards net worth?

Yes. A 401(k), IRA, ISA, SIPP, RRSP or super balance is yours even if you can't touch it yet. Some people show it separately because it's locked away, but it belongs in the total.

Can net worth be negative?

Yes. If you owe more than you own, often because of student loans or a new mortgage with a small deposit, your net worth is negative. It's common early in a career and isn't a problem in itself if it's moving in the right direction.

How often should I calculate my net worth?

Monthly or quarterly is enough for most people. Daily changes are mostly market noise. The point is the trend, which is why it helps to keep a history rather than recalculate from scratch.

Is my data stored?

No. This calculator runs entirely in your browser and doesn't send what you type anywhere. It only remembers the currency you picked, on your own device.

URL: https://worthbase.app/tools/net-worth-goal-calculator/

Free tools

# Net worth goal _calculator._

This net worth goal calculator projects your net worth forward from what you have now, what you add each month and the return you expect, and tells you when you'll reach your number. Or pick a date and it works out the monthly amount you'd need, which makes it a simple FIRE calculator too.

[How it works](#how) [Setting a FIRE number](#fire) [Worked example](#example) [Limitations](#limits) [Questions](#faq)

## How long will it take to reach my net worth goal?

The calculator steps forward one month at a time. Each month your balance grows by the monthly equivalent of the annual return, then that month's contribution is added. Once a year the contribution rises by the increase you set. The first month the balance reaches the goal is your answer.

monthly rate m = (1 + annual return)^(1/12) − 1 balanceₙ = balanceₙ₋₁ × (1 + m) + contributionₙ contribution rises by the yearly increase every 12 months

In the **monthly needed** mode it solves the same projection backwards. Because the final balance grows in a straight line with the starting contribution, it can find the exact monthly amount that lands on your goal on the target date, including the yearly increases.

## How do you set a FIRE number?

FIRE (financial independence, retire early) goals usually start from spending. A common rule of thumb is 25 times your yearly spending, which corresponds to withdrawing 4% a year. Spend 40,000 a year and the rule gives a target of 1,000,000 in investable assets.

FIRE number ≈ yearly spending × 25 (the "4% rule")

The 4% rule comes from historical US market studies and is a starting point, not a guarantee. Many people use a lower withdrawal rate (a higher multiple) for early retirement. Note that a FIRE number usually counts investments you can draw on, not your home, so you may want to set the goal on that part of your net worth.

## Worked example

The pre-filled figures are illustrative: a net worth of 150,000 today, 1,500 added each month and raised 3% a year, an expected return of 6% a year, and a goal of 1,000,000.

monthly rate = 1.06^(1/12) − 1 = 0.4868% goal reached after 198 months: 16 years 6 months without the 3% yearly increase: 217 months (18 years 1 month) to reach it in exactly 15 years: 1,858.92 a month to start, rising 3% a year

Raising contributions with your pay shaves about a year and a half off. The return assumption matters even more: small changes compound over 15 years, so try a pessimistic and an optimistic figure as well.

## Limitations

- Returns are assumed to be steady. Real markets go up and down, and the order of good and bad years changes the outcome.
- Figures are in today's money only if you use a real (after-inflation) return. With a nominal return, the goal will buy less when you reach it.
- Tax, fees and big one-off costs aren't included.
- It projects one balance. Property, retirement accounts and cash grow at different rates, so a single return is an average.

## Questions

What return should I assume?

Use a figure that matches what you hold and subtract fees. Many people use a conservative real return (after inflation) of 3–5% for a mixed portfolio. Try a few values: the answer is sensitive to it.

Should I include my home in the goal?

For a pure net worth goal, yes. For a FIRE or retirement target, most people exclude the home they live in, because it doesn't produce income to live on.

What is a FIRE calculator?

A calculator that tells you when your investments could cover your spending, so work becomes optional. Set the goal to your FIRE number (for example 25 times yearly spending) and this calculator shows when you'd reach it.

How is the monthly return worked out?

As the rate that compounds to the annual return over 12 months: (1 + annual)^(1/12) − 1. For 6% a year that's about 0.487% a month, not 0.5%.

Does it account for inflation?

Only if you enter an after-inflation return. With 7% expected growth and 2.5% inflation, enter about 4.5% to keep the goal in today's money.

Trusts, companies and SMSFs

# Track wealth held in trusts, companies _and SMSFs._

Worthbase is a family trust investments tracker and SMSF portfolio tracker in one: it records trusts, companies, self-managed super funds and partnerships as owners alongside the people in your household, with exact ownership splits, net worth for each entity, and cost bases and gains for each owner. Think of it as family office software sized for a household.

## Why track entities in _one balance sheet?_

When some of your wealth sits in a family trust, some in a company and some in a self-managed fund, each has its own statements, and its own accountant's view. You still want to know what the family is worth, and what each entity is worth on its own.

- **Entities as owners**

Add a trust, company, SMSF or partnership as a party. Any asset or loan can be owned by one or split between several owners by exact percentage.

- **Net worth per entity**

Ask for the household total, or for one owner: the trust's net worth, the company's holdings, the fund's performance.

- **Separate workspaces, separate people**

Keep an entity in its own workspace and share it only with the people who should see it, such as your accountant for the trust. Have as many workspaces as you need and see your net worth across all of them.

- **Roles you control**

Invite each person as viewer, editor or admin. Invitees join free, and every change they make is audited.

Gains by owner

## Cost bases and gains _for each owner._

When an asset is split between owners, each owner's share of the cost base, the realised and unrealised gains and losses, and the proceeds of a simulated sale follow the exact ownership split.

### Exact cost bases

Lots are tracked FIFO by default, or you pick specific lots. Buy fees go into the cost base and sell fees come off proceeds.

### Gains per owner

Realised and unrealised gains and losses per holding and per sale, split by owner: a person, a trust, a company or a fund.

### Simulated sales

Ask what a sale would do: proceeds, the lots used and the gain or loss for each owner. Nothing is written.

Worthbase reports gains and losses, not tax. How each entity is taxed is a question for your accountant.

Just ask

## Questions for _each entity._

What's the family trust worth today? How has the SMSF performed since 2022, including dividends? What were the trust's realised gains since July? If the company sold its ETF holding, what would the gain be? Invite our accountant to the trust workspace as a viewer. What's my net worth across all my workspaces?

Questions

## Trusts and companies _questions._

Do I need a separate plan for a family trust?

No. There's one plan, and it includes trusts, companies, SMSFs and partnerships as owners and as many workspaces as you need. See [pricing](/pricing/).

Is Worthbase accounting software for my trust or company?

No. It doesn't produce financial statements, calculate tax, lodge returns or keep a general ledger for the entity. It tracks what each entity owns and owes, its gains and its performance, so you and your accountant have accurate figures to work from.

Can my accountant see only the trust?

Yes. Put the trust in its own workspace and invite your accountant to that workspace only, as a viewer or editor. They join free and can't see your other workspaces.

Does it work for companies and trusts outside Australia?

Yes, for tracking. Ownership splits, net worth per entity, cost bases, realised gains and performance work in any country and currency.
